I graduated from college in 2002 with a Finance and M.I.S. degree, and went to work for General Electric's Financial Management Program (in their Consumer Finance division). At the time, I had aspirations of becoming a CEO of a Fortune 500 company, but sometime during my third month on the job, after working an average of 75 hours a week, I quickly realized that I wasn't going to create the lifestyle I envisioned working for someone else.

I completed my two-year commitment to the company, and fired my bosses in January 2005. A few months later, I went backpacking around Europe & Africa with a few buddies, and while partying in Ibiza, Spain, I received a call from a friend who invited me to a "Marketing for Deals" boot camp that coming month.

This was my "fork in the road". I had financed my 3-month trip on my credit card, was in debt, and had no income. The cost of the event was $997, and after a few minutes of internal debate, I bought the ticket, and booked my flight. I had committed to start a real estate business, and was going to make it happen one-way or the other. Less than two months after that boot camp, I closed my first deal and made $44,000 (which almost replaced my income with GE)!

Formed in 2007, Dinosaur Pile-Up are an English alternative rock band who broke out of the thriving Leeds rock scene of the time and instantly drew favourable comparisons to the cream of 90s US college rock. Founded originally as a solo project by songwriter and frontman Matt Bigland, the line up is completed by drummer Mike Sheils and bassist Jim Cratchley. Named after Matt saw the scene in Peter Jackson’s remake of King Kong where a stampede of dinosaurs pile up at the foot of a mountain, “DPU” put out their first official release, The Most Powerful E.P In The Universe, in 2009 and have gone on to record two studio albums, 2010’s Growing Pains and 2013’s Nature Nurture. 

The project was initially a handful of demos that Bigland had recorded on an 8-track recorder in his basement and at Leeds' Brudenell Social Club, performing and recording the drums, guitars, bass and vocals himself. These demos were hosted on a Myspace profile named 'Dinosaur Pile-Up' and quickly gained interest from the local scene and soon the UK music press. Due to offers for shows Bigland enlisted the help of friends in a 'revolving door' policy and began touring in late 2007. Since then DPU have toured extensively through the UK, Europe and the USA supporting acts such as Pixies, Cage The Elephant, Feeder, Twin Atlantic, You Me At Six and Middle Class Rut. In 2010 Mike Sheils officially joined DPU on drums, after meeting Matt on tour and famously bonding over Weezer's blue album. In late 2013 long standing friend Jim Cratchley officially joined DPU on bass after his previous band Tribes disbanded.

Speaking of the band’s first EP, which was initially recorded as an experiment, Bigland said "I wanted to go into a studio and see if I could record something that actually sounded like an album, and not just some sh**ty 8-track demo's I'd recorded in my basement. I knew how I worked best and what I wanted to create, but I didn't know if I was competent enough to record an entire album, so I used recording the E.P as kind of an experiment and didn't take it too seriously, thus the stupid name." Upon successful recording and release of the 'Most Powerful E.P...' recorded with local Leeds producer James Kenosha, Bigland went in to the studio again to record DPU's debut full length album "Growing Pains", again performing all instruments and vocals himself and again produced by James Kenosha. Growing Pains was recorded over a period of a month and a half and upon its release in October 2010 received widespread critical acclaim and radio support including UK Radio 1 taste maker Zane Lowe who has continued to support the band ever since. Between 2011 and 2013 DPU toured extensively in the UK and Europe, taking in many festivals including Leeds and Reading Festival, Oxygen Festival and T In The Park. After two years solid touring Bigland went in to studio again, this time with producers Ian Davenport and Tom Dalgety to record DPU's second full length album. Again Bigland recorded all the instruments himself split between Rockfield Studios in Wales and Courtyard Studios in Oxford. The album took two months to record but what he emerged with was one of the brightest, most bruising rock records of 2013 “Nature Nurture” which was described by Zane Lowe on its release as “Nature, nurture, two of the greatest words in existence, now neatly compacted together for an album that could be one of the greatest albums ever in existence”.

Nature Nurture proved to be the band’s first inroad into the American market where their sound proved to be a perfect fit for US radio on its release in early 2014, leading to several tours including their biggest to date supporting Brand New.  With the album set to be released in Japan and the Far-East in 2014, world domination is still on the cards.

Maps Need Reading is a four-piece art rock band based in Knoxville, Tennessee. The band fuses elements of jazz, indie, and post rock, creating a hybrid sound that equally satisfies the tastes of both progressive rock and pop fans alike. 

Guitarist David Webb, bassist Nathan Patterson, and guitarist/keyboardist Chris Burgess formed The Renaissants during their high school years, creating nifty indie pop music that slowly drifted toward more odd time signatures and dynamic arrangements. The three musicians formed Maps Need Reading in 2011 by adding drummer Jordan Sexton, whose style allowed the band to further develop a more progressive, post-rock-influenced sound. In 2014, Sexton left the band and was replaced by childhood friend and University of Tennessee music school companion DJ Young. 

Moving forward with Young, the band has further diversified its sound while continuing to refine the core audible elements that have kept fans coming back—long, dynamic orchestrations that combine deep, dissonant noise and danceable indie pop aesthetics. Each member of the band contributes their own respective influences to the writing process, and that diversity allows for songs that span all across the musical spectrum. The band released its Hopes for Chemistry EP in August, 2015, and has used the positive momentum the album has received to begin pushing their sound outside Knoxville.

Founded in 2005, formerly known as, "Fury for the Son", My Friend, The Monster started out as a departure from the first band that I had ever sang for in high school as it was coming to a close. I also wanted to be more selfish with my music and write with no limitations. Write in such a way that gives every idea a chance to be heard first before being shot down.

In 2007 at the age of 19 I wrote, produced and engineered my first album out of my bedroom using a collection of my own and some borrowed equipment. The 10 song LP titled, "Fury for the Son" was the start of what I knew was going to be a long life story told and illustrated by my music.

In 2010 after losing a best friend, a lover and learning about a much uglier side of life that I had never expected to become so well acquainted with I went back to the bedroom with 9 more songs and recorded, "Pathological, Compulsive, Storytellers". Heartache was all over that album with the rising hope of better things to come at the end. 

One thing I could never lose was hope. To this day not much has changed. With the lessons learned, my heart and mind continuing to evolve and my faith still intact I'm not about to. 

Fury for the Son lost nearly all meaning to me. The name needed to change. It was a much more innocent time in my life when I came up with it and after almost a decade of severe trial and error in a dangerous attempt to learn a thing or two about living, "My Friend, The Monster" tells the real story written by these songs over the last 9 years. The human race is monsterous. Our vindictive, spiteful, insensitive, self centered, overly self conscious, condescending, pretentious, apathetic, pitiful, violently jealous, addictive personalities made this monster. We can beat it if we admit our failings, our shortcomings and our flaws. When we become comfortable in our own skin, we've won.
