Debojyoti was initiated into Hindustani classical music and the Sitar at the age of 7 by his father. He is the grandson of dancer-choreographer Guru Valmiki Banerjee, the pioneer and propagator of the dance style Rabindranatyam. At the age of 18, he became a disciple of Pandit Barun Kumar Pal, a senior and eminent artiste of Hindustani classical music, pioneer and propagator of Hansaveena, and one of the foremost disciples of Bharat Ratna Pandit Ravi Shankar. As a student of the Ravi Shankar Centre, New Delhi, Debojyoti has been blessed by Pt. Ravi Shankar on several occasions. He is a graded artist of the All India Radio, Delhi, an empanelled artiste under the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (I.C.C.R.) and a National Scholarship awardee by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.

Debojyoti has played in several concerts – as a soloist, with his guru, and in duets (Youtube links attached in the end). Prominent among these have been in the RIMPA Music and Dance Festival in 2009 and 2014 at the Ravi Shankar Centre, New Delhi and in the Pt. Ravi Shankar Memorial Concert at Nehru Park, in 2013. Recently, he performed in ‘RaagAarti’ – a music festival organised by Shubham Music Circle, Delhi, commemorating the 99th birth anniversary of Pt. Ravi Shankar, in the India Habitat Centre. In 2016, he performed with his Guru in the Indian Classical Music and Dance Festival in the Singapore Indian Fine Arts Society (SIFAS), Singapore. He has performed in ‘Subah – e – Banaras’ in Varanasi in 2018. He has also performed with his Guru at the International Spiritual Assembly in Hrishikesh in 2014 and at the India International Centre in 2015. He got the opportunity to perform with Pt. Samir Chatterjee on Tabla, in 2016 in the ‘IIC Winter Festival of Music and Dance’ at the India International Centre (IIC), and in 2019 and 2015 at IHC. In 2020, he got the opportunity to perform with Ustad Akram Khan on Tabla, in the ‘IIC Double Bill Concert’ at IIC. He performed at the Civil Services Officers’ Institute (CSOI) in Chanakyapuri in 2016. In 2014, he performed for the ‘Drug Awareness Drive’ organised by NACEN, Govt. of India on the ‘UN International Day against Drug Abuse & Illicit Trafficking’ at the Siri Fort Auditorium. He performed in Aamad – a whole night concert, including many artistes, in Bhubaneswar in 2017. Debojyoti has also performed in the Annual Research Seminar at the Wildlife Institute of India in Dehradun in 2015.
