This is a piano solo piece in contemporary genre.

An interesting scene caught my attention one day when I was passing by the riverside. I saw two seagulls were fighting for food on the ground. One of them won a landslide victory by his large frame. He then jumped on the fence after eating. The seagulls who were around left one by one in the next few seconds, only himself staying on the fence, arrogant but lonely. 

That particular seagull seems to have complicated emotion. Seeing his silhouette standing on fence, I can't help imagining his inner state. He’s strong and fearless. However, have he ever felt lonely? In the first section, the music depicts a fight between seagulls followed by a part reflecting his emotional inner state. In the last section, the music turns to lively mood, as the seagull eventually joined the others, bathing in the river, seemingly joyful.

The Seagull - Piano Solo - Art music

This is a flute solo piece I composed in contemporary genre.

I was inspired by a film called ‘Dune’, which is set in the far future, the film follows Paul Atreides as his family, the noble House Atreides, is thrust into a war for the deadly and inhospitable desert planet Arrakis. The beautiful and vast desert scenes in the film left me deep impression, which drove me the motivation of writing a story by music.

Flute, I believe is a perfect instrument for telling this story. Apart from its playful characteristic, I always sense a sentimental timbre of it. Musically, flute depicts a vast and bare dune in the opening section. With melody out of the key, the danger of sandstorm is approaching from the distance. People, who live in the dune, struggling for surviving and fighting bravely against the nature in the following section is represented by higher pitch register and significant dynamic change. When the sandstorm is away, the dune seems back to quiet and the music is back to the original key. This short piece explores ideas of human and nature. Splendid scenery can be full of danger, but we still call it home.

Dune -  Flute Solo - Recording

This is a quartet I composed in contemporary genre.

By reading a non-fiction novel called ‘The Minds of Billy Milligan’, in which portrays the first person in U.S. history acquitted of a major crime by pleading multiple-personality disorder, written by Hugo Award-winning author Daniel Keyes, for the first time I get to know this dissociative disorder mental health condition. People with dissociative identity disorder have two or more separate personalities. These identities control a person’s behavior at different times and causes hallucination. It is related to childhood trauma, the acquisition of defense ability growing in the support lacking environment. I was astonished by Billy’s story and hope more people would give attention to this illness, avoiding it by giving children tender loving care and safe attachment.

I was reflecting on the state of one possible dissociative disorder symptom hallucination when I was writing this piece. Several contemporary composition strategies are applied to create a sense of chaos in the controllable way to symbolize the conflict inner state when people have trouble to recognize reality. This piece musically mingles with chaos and coordination, switching and transforming from one to another via tempo changing. Instruments take over musical phrase one by one to signify the process of imaginary scenes successively occupying the main status.
