Melissa Lyde is from Brooklyn, NY, and is the founder of Alfreda’s Cinema, a long-running immersive Black video art series, currently working towards opening its own space in Brownsville. Sharing music is a healing practice and as a free dancer, Melissa's selections are a sensuous induction of the body to feed the mind. She welcomes eager listeners on a groove of discovery through an array of jazz, house, classics, spiritual, and Afrikan sounds.

Running Circle w/ Guohan - August 2023

First (hopefully of many!) "Jazz (We've Got)" radio show.

I've been wanting to do a show inspired by this idea for the longest while, just mining and digging back through jazz (+more) and hip hop with the art of sampling being a bridging link.

Recognising a sample in a song always felt like such a wonderful easter egg, and I've always found it fascinating how a song can be universally adored, with a small portion of it being loved so much that it would form the DNA of a new piece of music (for me to fall in love with too). The idea that there's this thread connecting artists and music transcending generations, backgrounds and genres is so utterly romantic to me.

Every episode will highlight (mainly) a jazz musician whose music I love, and I'll explore their sound and catalogue through hip hop productions that sampled their sound and recontextualized it to a new generation.

I'm hoping to develop this into a show where I can invite musicians and producers to chat more about the process of sampling as well as their fav samples/approaches to production. I'd also love to get this idea to a point where at the end of every show I can share an obscure jazz or funk track by an artist, and put an open call for producers to share their reworks/reimagining of the song to feature in the next episode. Would be cool for this to be a proper musical exchange!

But! That's for the future. For now I just want to share this 1st episode: an ode to one of my fav trumpet players, the legendary Freddie Hubbard. We'll hear some of his iconic pieces (specifically 'Red Clay') that spread through such a luminary career, retold through the music of A Tribe Called Quest, Charlotte Dos Santos, Gagle, Jack Wilkins, & Raekwon.

Manchester’s Mark Torkington has been a firm pillar in the UK music scene since the late 90s, where in his early days he worked at the legendary Fatcity Records. It was here he cut his teeth and got well and truly hooked on the musical mix of hiphop and perhaps more importantly it’s influences.

Mark since contributed to a number of Fat City’s Mystic Brew compliation series, held down a residency at the infamously eclectic Friends and Family parties, plus guest DJ spots in and around the UK and Europe. Alongside this Mark also worked on his own club night Searchin’ based around funk and soul music, C’mon Feet focusing more on hip hop, as well promoting a series of charity fundraiser festivals for the Mine Action Group working to eradicate landmines. 

We’re big fans of Mark and his music and we’re blessed to have him featured. As well as his DJ mixes you can also catch him on Instagram where he regularly highlights rare and sometimes obscure 45s. Give him a follow, trust us, you’ll not be disappointed @markt45

As for the mix - it starts off pretty normal with the slow soul that I love, but then goes a bit freestyle with hip hop, french, Brazilian and salsa bits thrown in. Like most of my mixes its very laidback but hopefully provides a smooth journey across the genres and highlights some of the music I'm currently collecting. Although I did DJ in the past, I'm much more of a digger / collector these days and DJing and social media to me is about showcasing the music and pushing the lesser known gems to the listener.
