Where are You

August 2025 Currently on residency in Italy ! 
These are 3 short sketches using field recordings captured around Montegiovi, Tuscany. With these little works I am experimenting freely with what can be produced from each days sounds -  manipulating them and stiching them back together with the aim of producing a long format work at the end of the residency. 
I am truly thankful for this opportunity that has been provided for me by the Salamanca Arts Centre in Tasmania and Cultivate Projects/La Baldi residency in Italy and The USA. 
And of course the wonderful people of Montegiovi !

We talk, we read, we laugh

"Christianized " has nothing to do with religion , unless you consider the study to play a guitar like Charlie Christian a form of religious belief. Charlie landed a gig with the famous Benny Goodman and it is said Benny didn't really care much about having a guitar in his band or his sextet. Christian was among the first guitarists to amplify their sound to be able to take lead solos in a big band. The story is that another member of the band invited Charlie to sit in at the band's practice without Benny knowing. When Benny saw him there he was not impressed. When the band started playing, apparently, Benny called on the guitarist to take a solo thinking he would blow it and prove he didn't belong. Charlie Christian nailed a great solo and kind of changed Benny Goodman's mind. Charlie became a legendary guitarist after that and many ,many jazz guitarists Studied his Be Bop lines to carry them forward.
This composition by me was created while thinking about the way I heard Charlie Christian play. So I thought maybe my tune was a  bit Christianized!

Fell in love with Guitar sounds since I first heard Duane Eddy twanging out Rebel Rouser. Then I heard  Chet Atkins Hi Fi in Focus album. This was back around 1960.Me and my brother Cliff got guitars as soon as we could and started learning ourselves to play some tunes. Now about 60 years later I am still loving it. I lost Cliff last year but his jazz loving influence is still present in my playing. You can just never stop learning new stuff and ways of playing when you love the sound a guitar makes. My son Bryce also fell in love with guitar and he also is a fine singer. Il be also posting some songs that have been able play along with him.I  just hope there are people who will enjoy the music I play and post, thankyou Al Gibbs
