An effort is underway in Sacramento to permanently end the issuing of licenses fur commercial for trapping in California. Part of the motivation for the drafting of the Wildlife Protection Act of 2019 (Assembly Bill 273) is a change in people's perception of using animal fur for clothing and other uses, according to San Diego Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez. 

“I feel like as a society, we've evolved from this idea of killing foxes and coyotes and badgers for their fur and I think California in particular should be leading the way on this… this isn’t necessary. Most folks aren't buying fur anymore.”

The Assemblywoman also points out that with less than 70 commercial trappers buying state licenses yearly, the revenue doesn't even cover the cost of wildlife personnel to monitor it regulate trapping and sales of fur in the state.
