"Violet Drive was recorded between the Swiss alps and Berlin from 2020-2021. My old friend Tillmann has a studio in the Swiss alps, and we got together in May 2020 and just started recording and layering drums for the whole album in this studio in the middle of nowhere. After the drum sessions ended, I immediately travelled to Berlin to write the rest of the record with the other two boys. Brexit came into full effect in the middle of this: the album became this kind of fictional pan-European dream - the drum sounds of the motorways running through Germany, the languishing melancholy of old Italian films, the guitar sounds in the desert in the South of Spain. By way of this fictional soundstage, it then felt like I could write music about how we relate to ourselves and each other, through smokescreens and mirrors, permanently searching for something that we can hold on to, and call real, and true."
