Since we pay an extremely costly professional certification-- what do they do for us?  Produce testing that costs more money.  How about we put the ABIM, ACP, etc  PROVIDE SERVICE.  Keep invading businesses OUT of medicine.  Do NOT create more bureaucracies that we pay for and do not provide anything for us.  How about the ABIM and the ACP PROVIDE critical knowledge on a weekly to monthly basis that will keep us up to date on the MOST crucial new scientific and evidence based breakthroughs in internal medicine?

I think the function of a professional organization should be to PRESERVE and STRENGTHEN the profession--is that what's happening to Internal Medicine?  I see lots of articles about burnout, more aptly put, Moral Injury.  The societal abuse of Internists is on an every increasing upslope.  What is the ABIM/ACP doing to combat this on a societal leveL? Going to battle with insurance companies?  Filing suits?  Making the EMR actually work for doctors?  Unburdening doctors?  How does the ABIM and ACP score on these questions?

Chadi’s guest Kashyap Patel (@KashyappatelMd), MD, president of the Community Oncology Alliance (COA), joins the show to give an update on the current initiatives and state of COA and community oncology as a whole. He chronicles his journey to becoming a medical oncologist at a small community center outside of Charlotte (SC) and how he became aware of the pain points of community oncology in the U.S. The conversation moved into the history and initial aim of COA to help community practices prepare to work with and have an identity when facing policymakers, how COA membership dues are put to use, the top five problems facing community oncology today, and why many community practices feel compelled to sell to large health systems. Dr. Patel also shares his vision as the president of COA and what he hopes to accomplish before his term ends.

Updates from the Community Oncology Alliance with Kashyap Patel

A lot has been stated about the Maintenance of Certification (MOC) implemented by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM,) and many physicians, regardless of specialty, have been opposed to the MOC as it adds cost, burden, and takes away from patient care. This led Dr. Aaron Goodman from UCSD to start a petition to end the MOC, which gathered unwavering support with over 10,000 signatures in 2 weeks. In response, Dr. Richard Baron, the president and CEO of ABIM, has agreed to come on the show to address the concerns raised by physicians and to answer questions that have flooded all social media channels since the petition started.

What is the history of certification, recertification, and MOC? What is the “Grandfather” rule? What about data? COI? Cost? Burnout? Does the MOC really lead to better patient care? Why not stick to state-regulated CME courses? These issues are top-of-mind for a large number of physicians who are certified by the ABIM. 

You will not want to miss this heated, yet respectful and civil, discussion.
