From the Artist: 

These poems were first conceived during my writing residency at Greywood Arts in Killeagh, Co. Cork, Ireland. I traveled there as a way to connect with my ancestral roots and collaborate with the Irish landscape. While there, I learned of the Celtic Ogham, also known as the Celtic Tree Alphabet. The Celtic Ogham is an Early Medieval alphabet and is thought to be the oldest known form of written Irish. As with runes, each ogham symbol has a name, and each letter embodies the spirit of a tree or plant—the language is embedded in the landscape, and vice versa. Inspired by this ancient method of communication and means of divination, these poems are my way of connecting more deeply with my ancestry and the natural world. They’re an experiment in recasting ecology and language as spell and story. 

About the Artist: 

Sarah Alcaide-Escue is a wanderer/wonderer from the Florida swamplands and the author of Bruised Gospel (The Lune, 2020). She earned her MFA from the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics, and her work has most recently appeared in Channel Magazine, Always Crashing, The Lit Pub, and Entropy.
