Yvonne talks to Professor Mike Raco, Chair of Urban Governance and Development and Dr Frances Brill, Honorary Lecturer, about their new book ‘London’.

Modelling Behaviour for Spatial Planning with Dr. Heeseo Rain Kwon

Yvonne interviews Dr Gareth Fearn, a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the Bartlett School of Planning, about his paper ‘From post-political to authoritarian planning in England, a crisis of legitimacy’ which he co-authored with with Simin Davoudi (Newcastle University). 

Drawing on research into the case of shale gas fracking, the paper examines a shift in planning practice towards a more top-down, antagonistic system which limits political dissent and public participation – as a precursor to the government’s more recent attempts at planning reform.

From post-political to authoritarian planning in England with Dr Gareth Fearn

We are delighted to kick off the 2023-24 series with an illuminating discussion about codesign infrastructure with our own Dr Tse-Hui Teh, lecturer in urban design and planning. Tse-Hui speaks about her new book ‘Co-designing Infrastructures: Community collaboration for liveable cities’, which she coauthored with Sarah Bell, Charlotte Johnson, Kat Austen, and Gemma Moore. 

Codesign is a collaborative approach that involves diverse stakeholders in shaping transformative changes. It goes beyond traditional design roles, including people and entities often left out, to create more inclusive and effective solutions. 

Tse-Hui and Yvonne explore why this is such a challenging process, using the estate of Kipling Garden in Southwark as a case study.

Codesigning Infrastructures with Tse-Hui Teh. Can community collaboration create liveable cities?

In the second episode of the 2023-24 series, Yvonne speaks with Lauren Andres, Professor of Planning and Urban transformations at The Bartlett School of Planning. 

Lauren is the Global and UK lead for the PANEX-Youth project which aims to understand how young people, particularly those living in monetary poor households, have adapted during the pandemic and assess the wider impact of such processes of adaptations in South Africa, Brazil and the UK (England).

To do so, the team uses a nexus approach, focusing on food, education, and play/leisure, embedded within a wider understanding of the living settings (local places) and home/personal contexts (household composition and home/personal life). The findings of the research aim to support global recovery and renewal, and to enhance the resilience of society in a post-pandemic world.
