DJ favourite Razor N Tape has become somewhat of a right of passage for both veterans and up-and-comers. It’s sometimes uncanny how close their ear is to the ground when it comes to selecting guests for their releases, so it comes as little surprise that one of 2017’s breakout stars, Cody Currie, has been tapped for their most recent Reserve release.
All four tracks on Movin’ Smoke are contenders for Currie’s strongest work to date and it’s been great to watch his progression from cheeky edits to full on artist EPs. The mixes of the tracks are stronger as well, making these recent tracks equally suitable for either an armchair groove or a spin in a sweaty discotheque. And we mean it when we say spin as this release is vinyl only for the time being.

Movin’ on to the premiere, Infinity I & II begins with the swung, live drums we’ve come to expect from Cody along with found-sound style blips and bloops — or are they birds?. This sets the tone for a left-of-center trip into Rhodes town as an expertly flipped chord progression comes to the focus and sticks around for the remainder of the song. It’s sampling at its finest and, as with the best material on Razor N Tape, you’ll be damned to figure out the source.

Our premiere off @paso-1's new record on @fina-records comes from the B2 slot. "No Matter Where You're From" is a hazy, rising jam suitable for the deepest of late night motions. Sustained chords create a bittersweet texture above a smacking clap and kick. Looped, pitched and filtered vocals serve as the verse before a playful lead adds on to the progression. A nicely twangy solo helps signal the end of the morsel.

Every music lover feels a specific, even if sometimes undeserved, sense of achievement when they discover an obscure and underrated artist. So we were particularly stoked when we caught wind of France-based Marc Bianco. The little-known producer is about to again release an EP for French label Moonrise Hill Material – an imprint whose tracks we’ve premiered before – and the record is top quality. The five-tracker is made up of structurally diverse tracks that nevertheless unify under an aesthetic umbrella of sample-heavy, gritty and jazzy sounds.

Our premiere is the last and longest track on the record and probably our favourite, too, Harland Jam. Wonderfully fluent keys as well as splashy percussion staple this track, which you could imagine as the soundtrack for a hybrid jazz-house club. Perhaps it’s most impressive for it’s delicate balance of continuity and change: for the background-listener, the track could sound monotonous, but with a bit more attention the song’s dynamism and slow incline is clear. The track subtly picks up at around 2m30s, with energetic drum fills and keyboard jamming on top of the groovy three-chord progression that repeats throughout.

The record, called Serious Mass, will be the label’s ninth release. If you’re into modern and daring house records with an old-school feel, you’ll probably find it worth a purchase.
