BHS Fatherhood Engagement Specialist, Derek Lewis, is joined by a panel of dads- including Baltimore City Council President, Nick Mosby, and Baltimore Healthy Start board member, Terrance Lindsey- for a candid discussion about manhood, healthy relationships, and raising children with fatherly love. One disparity that plagues the Black community, but isn't openly discussed nor widely broadcasted, is the number of men, women, and children that go missing. Although African Americans make up 13% of the US population, nearly 40% of missing persons are of color and Black children make up 33% of all missing child cases. Furthermore, a research study published in the 2015 Communication Research Reports found that missing Black children only compromised 7% of media references. This lack of media coverage, as described by Jada Moss in “The Forgotten Victims of Missing White Woman Syndrome,” is likely connected to the fact that there are four times more unsolved Black missing person cases than there are cases of missing whites and Hispanics (Moss 740).

The Black and Missing Foundation, Inc. (BAMFI) recognizes the critical importance of helping us find us, and their mission is to bring awareness to missing persons of color; provide vital resources and tools to missing person's families and friends and to educate the minority community on personal safety. Founded in 2008 by Derrica Wilson and Natalie Wilson, BAMFI works tirelessly to ensure that Black people and other people of color reported missing don't slip through the cracks. Derrica and Natalie join us at The Well to talk about the impact that missing men, women, and children cases have on Black families, communities, and public health.
