Concatenation

Electroacoustic composition of 3 songs by Carolina Nairne, nee Oliphant, seminal Scottish poet/songwriter, sung by Lisa Lulis (https://soundcloud.com/user-572939939). The melodies are found in Neil Gow’s Lays of Strathearn
Carolina Nairne was sometimes known as BB (Bogan of Bogan) and SM (Scottish Minstrel) and whose work was often attributed to Robert Burns. With Burns, Nairne is responsible for forging Scotland’s identity in relation to the landscape. Nairne went to considerable lengths – even hiding her identity from her husband. A Jacobite, Nairne was forced into exile for 13 years after the battle of Culloden. 

This work is designed for a soundwalk (at user's discretion) along Rivers of Earn and Tay (as Nairne, lived in Gask, a few miles west of Perth. 
The work uses a limited sound palette drawn from sounds developed from resampling and processing of the voice as well as found sounds of objects close to the river Tay such as rubbish, litter and children’s play equipment (and resampled and processed derivatives). As such it highlights the complex relationship of the Perthshire rivers, environments and and identity.
