The last harvest of 2021 is here and I like to send a special thanks to all of you, the listeners! Thank you so much for tuning in every month! To help us celebrate the end of this season I contacted the DJ that has influenced & inspired myself and many others on our journey through HOUSE music. He has released originals and remixes on labels like Maya Records, Moulton Music, Desert Hearts Records just to name a few. He's been killin' it on the decks since the late 80's with his brilliant track selecting and fearless mixing style. I could probably go on and on, but I'll let the show do the talking haha. Here Mark Farina goes all out strictly for the love of the music, his fellow DJs and House music devotees all over the world. The mix is classic Farina: funky, catchy and smart. Vocals are there to keep you emotionally invested along the way as you dance and bob your head to the exciting beats. His signature perfect blends are so smooth and polished you realize you are listening to something special. The mix conjures up memories of his splendid San Francisco Sessions Vol. 1 effort of the late 1990’s and other faves throughout his storied career.

#MixClub is a community effort and radio show. It’s a collective of DJs and house music fans that is open to everyone to enjoy and participate. Each week a different DJ is featured. Typically the DJs are working pros, skilled hobbyists and even bedroom enthusiasts. While the mix airs, people (DJs & fans) from all over the world communicate at the Twitter hashtag #MixClub to network, exchange ideas, promote, make friends and pepper each other with questions and comments. In reality it’s been a small but growing community. So it was a major coup for us to land Mark Farina, and all thanks for doing so goes to #MixClub alum The Science Funk Project. Mark received no compensation for this mix and little publicity. He participated solely just to be part of the cool vibe that The Science Funk Project rightly presented it as. Mark already had everyone’s respect, but for him to do our little-known show out of the goodness of his heart and love of the music was so cool. This background info is as pure as it sounds, and as pure genius as the mix is too.

In a world where superstar DJs are often known as being conceited, demanding or distant, it has been amazing to see someone of Mark Farina’s caliber and reputation be so accommodating and nice. This mix is truly incredible. Dude went all out so blaze it and jam along.

For our second Distrikt Podcast we welcome the exceptional selector @markfarina(mushroom jazz / great lake audio recordings) for a hour and half of his signature blend of house!

Since 1989, Mark Farina has been traveling the globe performing at literally hundreds of shows a year, sometimes DJing both of his preferred styles in two different rooms at the same party. At other events, he's been known to play extended sets that lasted over eight hours. In his House sets, Mark is known for his uniquely effortless journeys on the jazzy side of Chicago House, mixed up San Fran style.

This wandering record minstrel has played to incredible crowds all over the globe. Consistently drawing new fans to his style of chunky-funky rhythms and deep underground house, Mark plays upwards of 200 shows to over one million (1,000,000) club goers per year. Voted in the top 20 DJ's in the world by MUZIK and BPM Magazine, his taste making skills continue to turn the heads of seasoned veterans as well as youngsters just getting into the music.

On CD, Mark has recorded both of his dominant musical personalities. His first mix, 'Mushroom Jazz' on Om Records, is defined by a hip-hop sub-groove with jazzy, dubby elements in the downtempo range. It was followed by 'Seasons', a critically acclaimed House mix. An Imperial Dub mixed CD, a guest slot in the pedigreed 'United DJs of America' series, 'Mushroom Jazz 2' (Om Records) and 'San Francisco Sessions, Vol. I' (Om Records) and Mushroom Jazz 3 (Om Records) to round out the Farina catalog. His past release "Connect" walks the line of San Francisco deeper and the bumpin' funky house sound of Chicago. Now, in November of 2002, Mark Farina releases his much beloved fourth volume of Mushroom Jazz.

Great Lakes Audio Recordings is the brainchild of label head honcho Mark Farina, creator of Mushroom Jazz and legendary House Music DJ. Since his days at Gramaphone Records in Chicago in the 90s, Mark has always been a creative trailblazer in his approach and musical execution. Whether it was making handmade mixtapes featuring his artwork or mixing genres to eventually come up with his signature Mushroom Jazz sound, Mark has built his career on presenting a very personal vision of what a DJ can be. 
Great Lakes Audio Recordings is an extension of that drive to bring only the best in underground music to DJ’s and the masses alike. The label’s focus is squarely on promoting the work of producers from around the world that share that funky, groovy, soulful, and Chicago influenced sound fans have come to expect from Mark.  The Farina sound will be represented to the fullest on Great Lakes Audio Recordings with Mark curating every release from the music to the artwork.  Label Manager Jerry Walker (AKA J-Dub) has partnered and toured with Farina over the last 2 decades and has joined him to help create this new space for producers, visual artists, and fans to join together to share their love of House. Drawing inspiration from the history of the DIY culture that built this now global scene, Great Lakes Audio Recordings will be firmly rooted in the spirit of the loft parties, warehouse raves, and indie record stores that gave birth to this musical movement.
The label plans to continue to work with artists from it’s previous incarnation (GLA) such as Demuir, Kid Enigma, Ed Nine, Jazzman Wax , Iban Montoro, Riki Inocente, Ed The Spread and DJ Sneak while also promoting the work of new label artists like Javi Bora, Andres Boned, and Todd Omotani.  We’ll also be bringing new merchandise to market featuring our amazing new logo and artwork from releases and events. Our social media presence will be strong and constantly updated with fresh content found on our new Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Soundcloud, and YouTube pages.  Ed Nine & Kid Enigma, Iban Montoro & Jazzman Wax, Matt & Ricky, and JT Donaldson kick started the label beginning in 2018 gearing up steadily into 2019. Future releases include releases from Bonetti & Alek Soltirov, Iz, Kid Enigma, Chris Nazuka, and the man himself, Mark Farina.
