Beyond causing delays, COVID-19 will impact the many administrative and logistical aspects of the 2020 U.S. presidential election — from staffing to absentee ballot printing to vote counting. How can we prepare if we don’t know what to expect? What happens if there is a second wave of the virus? Is the coronavirus relief bill’s $400 million to protect elections enough? Election scholars Ned Foley (OSU Moritz College of Law) and Franita Tolson (USC Gould School of Law) welcome guests Nathaniel Persily (Stanford Law School) and Charles Stewart III (MIT Political Science) to discuss what needs to be done to prepare for Election Day.

The panel discussion was moderated by Professor Robert Weissberg and SCJC Executive Director, Debbie Mukamal. Panel discussants include: Corene Kendrick, Prison Law Office; Chris Henrichson, Vera Institute of Justice; Dorsey Nunn, Legal Services for Prisoners with Children/All of Us or None; and Dr. Homer Venters of Community Oriented Correctional Health Services and former Chief Medical Officer for the NYC jail system.

McClatchy Professor of Law at Stanford Law School, discussed the 2020 election and the ways the nation is preparing to vote in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. Michael McConnell, Stanford Law Professor and Director of the Stanford Constitutional Law Center, led the discussion with Persily about what steps states should take in order for all voters in 2020 to remain safe.

The Rock Center for Corporate Governance at Stanford University is launching a series of online sessions addressing novel and difficult challenges posed by the ongoing COVID-19 crisis and other contemporary public policy issues implicating corporate America. The first in the series is Jay Clayton, Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission and Stanford Professor Joe Grundfest. The conversation includes discussions on the implications of the current COVID-19 pandemic for the nation's securities markets and focuses on corporate disclosures, market function, financial reporting, and anti-fraud concerns. It also includes a Q&A session addressing questions submitted by the community.

A Conversation with SEC Chairman Jay Clayton and Professor Joe Grundfest

In this third installment of the "Coping with COVID" series, ALI President David F. Levi is joined by six law school deans to discuss how their schools are adjusting to remote learning, including adapting experimental classes, clinics, and other hands-on courses to the online format. The deans also discuss how law schools are responding to the crisis by adjusting their admissions processes and re-allocating resources, all while maintaining a normal level of scholarly exchange and excitement. The panel also looks ahead to when schools may re-open as well as the effects of the pandemic on students outside of the classroom, including views on summer and permanent positions as well as bar exams.
