I wanted to cover this song as a self-love song. The original is from the perspective of a man who seems like he's trying to fix a woman who doesn't love herself. Sure, that could be interpreted as sweet, but maybe she struggles with self-love because she was born into a world that tells her she can never be good enough. So, I felt this song could use an update. Maybe "she will be loved" after all :)

I decided to go dark with it because for me, lyrics like "momma dear, we're not the fortunate ones" and "hide her away from the rest of the world," as well as many others, feel like a woman's struggle to break free of oppression. The reality of second class servitude for women isn't happy or joyful. "I want to be the one to walk in the sun." Me too, Cyndi, me too.

Natalia Bortolotti (aka Natalie Elaine Bortolotti, NEBULUS, SAWNIC) is a Grammy-nominated Songwriter, Composer, Music Producer and Sound Designer.
