Mix of the Week #317: Classic Lover

At the age of 23, Barbara and four of her closest friends formed a band that would later develop into "Alter Disco" - which is today one of Brazil's most important collectives of Underground Dance Music. In a country that is more and more starting to feel the suffocating grip of political suppression, the collective's events were an example of escapism, longing for a freedom of expression and happiness as well as mutual acceptance and tolerance, all tied together by a re-discovering and reclaiming of old-school Brazilian pop culture. 

This sentiment is also expressed in the present mix which Bárbara kindly agreed to record for 5918mins. With spring arriving in Europe, it perfectly encapsulates the relief many of us are feeling after a long winter. Notwithstanding the current situation, this mix gives a glimpse into happier and sunnier days and hopefully convinces people to have their drinks and dances at home rather than out in the park. We also hope that Barbara and everyone in Brazil stays safe as the pandemic is about to hit a country run by a man that has seemingly taken nothing onboard from the lessons that we have been learning all over the world.
