"BROKE" by TRACE, JB is a track I shelved for AGES before finally recording it in 2024 with new inspiration thanks to my good friend. Leading up to 4/20 in 2022, my workplace was expecting to have an outdoor party where I was hoping to perform for the first time as a vocalist. I came across this beat and decided to try something way out of my usual expectations and style. I originally envisioned this to be a hype song for performances, but we ended up channeling something completely different.

-BEFORE LEGALIZATION-
Before Missouri and Illinois legalized recreational cannabis, most people had to find cannabis from friends, family, or questionable strangers. Thankfully, the story behind "BROKE" is a story between friends. 

Whenever someone is broke but still wanting to smoke, they'd have to ask for a front or to be smoked out. Even if it'll take a week for them to pay you back... we almost always ended up smoking each other out. It's a sense of community that I can't quite explain, but I love it.

While the overall vibe is meant to be comedic, it also brings me nostalgia as I think about how many questionable people I went through, just to smoke safely. I'm very thankful cannabis has been legalized, and I'm hoping to see more progress in the other states as well!
