Fearing each wish you’ve treasured,
dread every dream adored.

No net with a wide bold stitching
will snatch what you want for stew.
Can you hear Heaven's pitching
curses for all to view?

Meek flesh with pain and yearning
mustn’t desire a thing.
Those who stayed, by turning—
they’ll reap the ripened ring.

A neighbor’s wife, or friend’s water,
a jug for thirst in the sun—
Desires will squeeze and slaughter,
drain you till you’re undone.

Some people brim with invention—
pure from their heads to their toes.
They’re damned by their intention,
hating the wants they chose.

Profit leaves them disinterested,
manna they never await.
Only alive, uncongested,
too squeamish to touch a plate.

Forget your own desires,
why need a slave or steer?
Go offer what life requires,
wretched, poor, and mere.

As twilight drops from grieving:
Play fool, pray, thieve, and groan!
There’s space in your travel sack given—
enough for your life alone.
