Im sorry it's taking me so long to upload my show from August. I gave birth 5 days after i recorded this episode, so my time has been dedicated to this little new life who is now earthside. It has been the most transformative experience of my life as you can probably imagine. He is my sun, in all his light and warmth.

Embarking on the new calendar season of De Kat Memwa with a guest I've been eagerly anticipating. There's always been an imaginary roster of creators in my mind that I'd be thrilled to host in the series. Vienna-based artist Andrea Ida has long been on this list, but somehow, due to my own negligence, I couldn't get in touch with her. Finally, I managed to correct this glaring mistake.

I recall stumbling upon Andrea's mixes somewhere around 2019, and I was absolutely mesmerized. Nearly every corner of the sonic internet space was filled with tropical sounds, which we were also cultivating at that time. However, Andrea stood out among music enthusiasts with her love for krautrock, punk, NDW, and other dark arts and matters.

I deeply admire individuals with diverse musical interests who can showcase a wide array of genres in their mixes, while evoking a specific emotion or association. Andrea is precisely one of those musical weavers. Her mixes are comprised of different nodes and intertwinings that form a unified masterpiece.

For me, her works are always about active listening, surprise, inspiration, and most importantly, immersion in sound, transitioning from one state to another, and also about charisma and daily protest against routines. And this unique release, recorded by Andrea specifically for De Kat Memwa, is no exception.

As I was crafting this text, I wanted to encapsulate the impression of listening to the mix in the form of a metaphor. Perhaps it was obvious to write something about an esoteric shamanic ritual.... But not today... 

For me, this mix is akin to riding on Falcor the Luck Dragon from the movie The NeverEnding Story, only you're not a teenager anymore, but an adult!

Ever since hearing the recent album by wunderkind DJ Ramon Sucesso released by Lugar Alto earlier this year I’ve been obsessed with the contemporary baile funk sounds coming out Brazil, some of the most exciting and avant-garde dance music I’ve heard in a long time. For today’s show, Justin La Rose has put together over an hour of wild baile cuts, a mix he’s calling Não é Para Amadores" “Not for amateurs,” a title deeply ingrained in Brazilian social life, conveying the intense and unapologetic nature of the culture. It’s a mix of raw an impertinent music from young producers and MCs pushing the boundaries of song and sound. Drawn to Brazilian music over two decades ago, Justin splits his time between Brazil and Canada, immersing himself in the culture. Look out for upcoming releases on Justin’s newly minted label, Nonshape Records, where he will be showcasing some of the rising talents of baile funk in Brazil.

Bangladesh only a decade after its 1971 independence war with Pakistan created a number of bands who combined the traditional songwriting techniques with influences from western acts. There is an obvious influence of Reggae, New-Wave, Funk and Psychedelic Rock throughout most of these recordings. Most of these bands released directly to cassette since there wasn’t much of a budget to produce vinyl LP’s. However this low barrier of entry resulted in many bands picking up their instruments to have a go at stardom. This mix here is a selection of the vast variety of 80s and 90s Bangladeshi bands who created a unique sound of melancholy yet infectiously funky tunes. These recordings reflect the heart and minds of the Bangladeshi people still torn by war but also holding on to the hope of a brighter future.
