Before the fame, Mesa Babe was holed up in an abandoned mining town in Nevada, the kind of place where the dust never settles and the silence feels staged. The town had been empty since 1953, after a government nuclear test nearby poisoned the soil. What wasn’t in the official records were the experiments that followed: miners who stayed behind, workers who volunteered for “compensation,” and families who were never evacuated.

Locals said that in the weeks after the tests, they could still hear the drills underground, even though the mines had been sealed. Those who wandered too close swore they saw figures moving through the heat haze, faces burned smooth, eyes reflecting light like glass. The government blamed hallucinations from radiation exposure.

Decades later, the band stumbled on a box of reel-to-reel tapes in a crumbling service station near the test site. Each tape was labeled with a date and the word “response.” When they played them, the recordings were mostly static, except for faint voices counting, whispering, and sometimes screaming.

Numb to It came from those tapes. Abigail reworked one of the distorted voices into the song’s opening sample, thinking it was just background noise. But during recording, the equipment began picking up interference even when disconnected, clicks, breaths, faint counting. Addison said it didn’t scare her anymore; it just felt like the sound of people who had forgotten what fear was.

The song became their reflection of that numbness, the silence that comes after the panic, when you stop fighting the darkness and start living inside it.

And now, every time Numb to It plays live, the same interference creeps into the monitors, as if something underground is still trying to answer back.
