عثر بين أوراق تشيخوف على هذه المناجاة منفصلةً ومكتوبة بخط يده :

" ارتكب سليمان خطأ فادحاً عندما نشدَ الحكمة ."

سليمان ( وحيداً ) : آه! يالهذه الحياة المظلمة! عندما كنتُ طفلاً, ما من ليلٍ أرعبني بظلامه كما يرعبني الآن وجودي الخفيّ. يا ربّ, أما وهبتَ داود هبة الكلمات والأصوات المتناغمة لكي يترنم ويحمدك على أوتاره, في رثاءٍ عذب, ويبكي الناس أو يدفعهم إلى حب الجمال؛ فلماذا وهبتني هذا العقل الجائع المؤرق المثقل بالتأملات؟ أتخفّى في الظلام مثل حشرةٍ ولدت من الغبار؛ وكياني كله يرتجف ويرتعد في خوفٍ ويأس, أرى وأسمع في كل شيء لغزاً خفياً. لماذا هذا الصباح؟ لماذا تشرق الشمس من وراء المعبد لتذهِّب النخلة؟ لماذا جمال النساء هذا؟ إلى أين يسرع العصفور, وما معنى طيرانه, ما دام هو وصغاره والمكان الذي يهرعون إليه سيصيرون غباراً مثلي؟ كان خيراً لي لو لم أولد قط أو ليتني كنتُ حجراً لم ينعم عليه الله بالعيون والأفكار. وإنهاكاً مني لجسدي عند حلول الليل, حملتُ الرخام إلى المعبد مثل أيِّ عامل طوال نهار أمس؛ ولكن ها قد حلّ الليل الآن ولا أستطيع النوم .. سأذهب وأستلقي. أخبرني الفريسيون أنه إذا ما تخيل المرء قطيع شياهٍ يركض, ثم صوّب انتباهه عليه, اضطربَ الخاطر وأخلْدَ إلى النوم, وهذا ما سوف أفعله ..
