Hailing from the North Coast, avid songwriter & poet Sinead McGarry embarked on a career in music over 7 years ago. Sinead draws her influence from many greats like Bessie Smith, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Nina Simone, Janis Joplin, Ann Wilson, Beck, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits and Aretha Franklin.
Some would say a latecomer to the music scene but with a natural flare as a lyricist has seen her quickly become one of the most sought after co-writers on the island.
Not only has Sinead written with some of the best in local talent including Rory Nellis, Cormac Neeson (The Answer) but she has worked internationally, writing with BMI award winning Nashville veteran songwriter Jude Johnstone. Jude has has written songs for Johnny Cash, Stevie Nicks, Bonnie Raitt & many other household names, Unchained was the title track on Johnny’s Grammy winning Album ‘American II: Unchained. Jude has also written with Bob Dylan.
Sinéad’s work has received positive critical review and extensive radio plays across the UK, Ireland & Australia. Her song ‘Sweet Gentle Love’ co written and performed by Cormac Neeson was shortlisted for the 2019 NI Music Prize featuring on his album White Feather. This song was also featured regularly on BBC NI’s Stendhal Festival coverage including the highlights programme, and more recently it was released as a single in late 2020.
Sinead took part in the Oh Yeah Centre’s Pioneering 12 week ‘Mothers in Music’ songwriting programme, and will be performing in Oh Yeah’s Women’s Work Festival as part of two virtual video performances. The first being the Mothers in Music cover of KT Tunstall’s “Push That Knot Away”, and a collaborative virtual video cover of Kate Bush’s “ Running Up That Hill” which will raise funds for domestic abuse charity Women’s Aid.
Sinead continues to work with a multitude of established and emerging songwriters and she enjoys the challenges of working in different genres. This summer Sinead can found working at Tileyard London’s Summer Writing Bootcamp, writing pitches for established top 40 artists.
Post pandemic she hopes to take the songwriters pilgrimage to Nashville. In the meantime Sinead is finishing her own EP which was halted due to the global pandemic
