Ambient music is a genre of music that emphasizes tone and atmosphere over traditional musical structure or rhythm. It is often "peaceful" and lacks composition, beat, and structured melody. It uses textural layers of sound that can reward both passive and active listening and encourage a sense of calm or contemplation. The genre is said to evoke an "atmospheric," "visual," or "unobtrusive" quality.

As an early 20th-century French composer, Erik Satie used such Dadaist-inspired explorations to create an early form of ambient/background music that he labeled "furniture music." He described this as music that could be played during a dinner to create a background atmosphere for that activity rather than serving as the focus of attention.

FMSAO - A Mix for the Safety and Pleasure of Sofa Trips and Hangovers

after compiling the first two volumes of this mix series i got a full time job, which restricted my time greatly, and i had to prioritize on live jams and editing recorded output, but an opportunity presented itself the other weekend to record an ambient mix on two XDJs and a turntable.

i recorded this after having XDJs in the apartment for a week to record a dance mix. the morning of the day i had to return them i decided to load some things i had been listening to onto a USB drive and just play around. in keeping with my approach in my studio practice, this was recorded in one take <3 i'm really happy with how it turned out. enjoy :)

An opportunity to glimpse into the home-listening playbook of an artist is always an intriguing premise for a podcast. It is a chance to build depth and create context for the music that is produced by the artist, as well as what is generally chosen to penetrate the club walls.
 
For Inchmix074, Belgian artist @emily_jeanne has compiled an eclectic selection of tracks, meticulously crafted to slowly unfold over 100 minutes.

For the first quarter of the mix, the ears are welcomed with crunchy, broken sound design paired with the metallic pinball of IDM compositions. The mix progresses into downtempo percussive numbers before breaking into a proper gallop with DnB, 170 & Grey-Area Techno. Putting on the breaks, Emily works her way back to the obscure corners of contemporary ambient and post-club music before bringing the mix to a gentle conclusion; a mix which continues to surprise after successive listens.

After a summer hiatus, we’re back to our guestmix series with Lyon-based project Jonnnah. Recently emerged from the abyss via a noteworthy debut-EP on Worst Records, the French Producer already distinguished himself with his own aesthetic, somewhere between emotive ambient, hyperrealistic textures, synths soarings and tumultuous drums, soon to be found on various labels.

For his Bamboo Show, Jonnnah took off from undisclosed lakes, skimming their surface for an aery, celestial hour of abstract waves and delicate lyricism. A few rhythmical drops disrupt these plain stretches of water, just to highlight the beauty of their usual undying stillness.

~ About The Story ~

This mix was recorded live on August 28th, 2016 at Funkhaus Berlin in the external garden next to the river using 2 turntables and two cdjs.

It was a long day with the weather cooperating in the morning and into the afternoon. However in the distance we saw a storm  approaching which caused concern as we are set to play last in the line up when it was completely dark. During our set there was a surreal atmosphere with the wind and clouds and a lot of electricity in the air. The lightning from afar approached closer and closer formulating a very intense and unique set.

We intended to play for 3 hours but after just 1 hour the rain started heavy and we had to stop the music and quickly cover all the gear. The end of the last track in the mix has been added to the original recording. Due to the story behind the mix we are calling it "Storm approaching”.

After the red leaf and the gold have gone, 
Brought down by the wind, then by hammering rain 
Bruised and discolored, when October's flame 
Goes blue to guttering in the cusp, this land 
Sinks deeper into silence, darker into shade.

About the mix:

 As I often take the plane and I have a bunch of long ambient tracks over 30, 40 and 50 minutes from Bandcamp, I thought of making a mix longer than usual (usually less than 80 for CD's) for the purpose of soothing the plane flights. Also inspired by Brian Eno, I preferred beatless tracks with nurturing synth sounds.
