Shanghai’s SVBKVLT label has long been spreading its futuristic sounds across the globe. Its latest electronic offering to the world comes courtesy of producers Osheyack and Nahash, who have both appeared on the label before and now join forces on forthcoming dance EP ‘Club Apathy‘. Despite what the name might suggest, it’s entirely focused on intensely rhythmic club sonics drawing from reggaeton, hard drum and hardstyle, with remixes coming from DJ Marcelle and Nkisi. It’s “simply meant to be a hedonistic club record,” according to Osheyack. The pair are known for their highly technical and genre-splicing mixes that rattle through a vast array of sounds at 100mph. In this vein, their Dummy Mix takes this frenetic pace, flipping through UK drill, US rap, techno, gqom, drum ‘n’ bass and many more. “The mix is made up of a lot of tracks we’ve traded back and forth, work from peers as well as classics,” Nahash says. “At the moment I’m putting the final touches on my next EP for Polaar and Osheyack is settling in for two months of touring with SVBKVLT across China.” Peep the mammoth tracklist through the link and take a trip through some of the most forward-thinking sounds of the present.

For his MUTEK debut, Nahash drew inspiration from Flowers of the Revolution, his Tides and Stockpiling EPs, as well as unpublished and exclusive material. Some heavy drums and airy synths created a makeshift jungle sound built from recycled drum loops and second-hand trance samplers.

Founded in 2016 by Matt Lutz,  JEROME is an experimental label and platform, looking to push the boundaries of music through audio and visual projects.The label started out as a simple mixfile series, focusing its efforts on lesser known talents and allowing them to be heard. The mixfile series developed into a label and has done releases with such artists as Worli, Morten HD, BLEID, Lensk and more.'

Shelter – Nahash 27.09.24

Artist, producer and DJ Raphaël Valensi embarked on his Nahash adventure in 2013 while in Shanghai, releasing electronic music inspired by metal on his own label Huashan Records. This same label also housed some of China’s first experimental AV, noise and drone bands, and promoted the Shelter Club’s “Let's get naked and listen to a bunch of drones” nights. Concurrently, Valensi was a resident DJ for Shanghai’s Acid Pony Club series of events. Nahash left the Chinese mega-city in 2017 to settle in Montréal, though he continued to work with Shanghai’s independent label SVBKVLT as their main mixing and mastering resource. In 2019, Nahash’s sound started taking new forms with his remix of Gooooose’s Plasma Sunrise, a mix of pounding rave drums, harsh noise textures and warm percussions arranged through the filter of Dancehall, old UK Bleep and Jungle records. Nahash drew the attention of peers and press alike with his Flowers Of the Revolution album, released in 2020 on SVBKVLT. In 2021, Nahash released the Club Apathy EP with longtime collaborator Osheyack on SVBKVLT, crowned Best EP of April 2021 by FACT Magazine and Resident Advisor. Nahash again pulled no punches with the release of his Tides EP on label POLAAR earlier this year; heavy drums and airy synths create a makeshift jungle sound built from recycled drum loops and second-hand trance samplers.

A trio of guitar, bass and drums, Elektro Guzzi overcome the boundary between analogue versus digital, performing techno live with the drive of a machine and the sonic detail of an instrument – without any computers or loopers.

For their upcoming album Polybrass, Elektro Guzzi have drastically expanded their sonic repertoire: both in the studio and on stage, they are joined by an ensemble of three trombonists, opening up a whole new realm of possibilities. With Hilary Jeffrey, Daniel Riegler and Martin Ptak, the band are joined by three brass heavyweights, each of them well renowned for both their solo ventures as well as projects such as The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble, Sand and Zeitkratzer.

By treating the three trombones not simply as a set of extra instruments but rather as one coherent body of sound on its own, Elektro Guzzi dissociate the brass instruments from their conventional use and repurpose them into something completely different: a modular synthesizer, with each trombone representing one oscillator.

In doing so, Elektro Guzzi add new layers of depth to their music, emphasizing a more cinematic side of their music: like the soundtrack for a movie, Polybrass is bigger, darker, more dramatic, more intimate. Warm and fuzzy textures float weightlessly above fragile soundscapes and complex sonic fragments. At the same time, the band’s signature sound runs distinctly through the entire album: solid percussive grooves, stripped down to the absolute minimum it takes to make your body move. Hypnotic repetition, building tension and suspense up to a point where the energy of the music gets so intense you feel like you can physically touch it with your hands, interlaced with organic patterns of sound, constantly changing and evolving, pulsating and oscillating.

Polybrass will be released on Denovali Records on October 26th, 2018.
