The Stray Amigos (disquiet0525)

I was listening through some recent field recordings and thought this recording of me hurrying down ten flights in a concrete stairwell of an older apartment building in San Francisco might serve as a sort of free rhythm track for the next pass or two. I felt it could use some emphasis of the resonance on the landings, which I added with EQ and a subtle delay. There's also a short noise loop at one point. This was a fun disquiet when I did it two years ago!

"The plan is for you to record a short and original piece of music, on any instrumentation of your choice. Conceive it as something that leaves room for something else — other instruments, other people — to join in."

This track features spare drums and two keyboard loops; composed into a basic intro, four measures of drums, a two measure break of mainly a keyboard loop, then closing drums. So there's room for bass, guitar, keyboards, more percussion, sound samples, whatever fits. 130BPM.

I often start files with some drums and one instrument, thinking I am setting up the scaffolding for a future song... but have a lot of files that only get that far. This is the most I've completed in a long time, and very quickly; so it is probably a mental thing - it's easier as part of a bigger collaborative project handed to someone else.

Caveat: Everything is panned to the left per the project request. However Garageband's panning knob isn't knocking those drums out of stereo, so I'm still hearing them in the middle(?).

Magic Number 1 - disquiet0525

This week's junto is to record th efirst part of a trio - which others can add to over the next two weeks.  

I love these ones :-)  The challenge is always in leaving space - I'm not very good at that generally!

For my part, I created a 15-note long sequence, that has it's start point changed every now and again to shorten it, and also has triggers that are changed occasionally, and random notes added in varying amounts at different times, to add interest and movement. This sequence is played on Rings with a plucked guitar-like tone, that has reverb and echoes added for more movement.

An ambient snippet. G Major, 49 BPM. Envisioned as one of a trio - perhaps three loops playing off each other.

A small selection of an attempt at a Basinski-style "Disintegration Loop" on the Digitakt. Sampled myself playing a small section of Holst's "Jupiter", and then chopped that into phrases on the Digitakt. I changed the probability that each phrase would trigger as I went further into the piece, and changed various effect parameters as well.

Magic Number (sash) (disquiet0525)

This track was created as response to the Disquiet Junto Project 0525: The composition is meant to be the first third of a trio. Two other artists can add their parts to build the final track.

This track is called 2π since π is my favourite magic number: It determines many processes in our world, it even can be seen as the base of music!
Among others π is found in the  formula for the period of an ideal mathematical pendulum first derived by Christiaan Huygens.

2π (Disquiet 0525)

With Liquid Hats (110bpm) [disquiet0525]
Created in Bitwig, samples and effects – mostly a drum part for adding to. This was originally done to work against Norns based drones but I pared these right back with just a few bleeps using an Euclidian gate sequencer plug in.
