Our Gospel for the 4th Sunday of Advent is the story of Mary rushing to visit her cousin Elizabeth. When Mary arrives, Elizabeth recognizes something extraordinary about Mary’s visit, as the child with her womb (John the Baptist) leaps for joy! Elizabeth immediately recognizes that this is a sacred moment: a moment of encountering God and knowing that something incredible has just taken place.

When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting,
the infant leaped in her womb, 
and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, 
cried out in a loud voice and said, 
“Blessed are you among women,
