One of the most exciting and influential figures in contemporary underground electronic music, Vladimir Ivkovic is not just a DJ, but a storyteller of sounds, a connoisseur of music and a brilliant artist. With a unique talent for selecting records and slowly inviting them to intertwine into complex and compelling narratives, Vladimir has been pushing the boundaries of electronic music since the 80s. 

Although he has been making music for almost two decades, he really honed his craft and gained exposure when he became resident at Düsseldorf’s Salon des Amateurs club alongside Lena Willikens, Toulouse Low Trax and Wolf Muller.

Immerse yourself in two hours of deep listening with this Rasputin-like, but actually very gentle man who explores notions of beauty and tranquility through unusual frequencies created by playing records at the wrong speed.

With pleasure and honor we welcome friend and maestro Gigi Masin (@gigi-masin) to the series. Q&A (short version) below.

MFM: Ciao Gigi. So, you first started experimenting with music in the late 70's, please can you tell a bit about how it was to be a young aspiring Italian musician back then? 

GM: Here? Nobody care about young musicians... if you try to make some new sound (no pop music, no opera, no symphony, no dance) this country is really a bad choice.

MFM: How did you discover all those artists and their music, in Italy where all was about pop and opera, and while internet was hardly known?

GM: Not hardly known, just it didn’t exist... But good radios, good books and good concerts made the difference. 

MFM: You used to be a fulltime radio DJ for quite some years, right? Can you tell a bit more about that period and how it happened? 

GM: My dream nr.1 was to be a radio dj when i was 12 and the nights were devoted to Radio Luxembourg. I was 18 when in Italy the Government gave permission to start using the FM frequencies to broadcast music and voices.. Radio Luxembourg was a private radio, broadcasting from the Luxembourg but the studios were in London, it was pretty famous in the 70s for their late shows. 

MFM: Did it feel a little controversial to be playing other people's music while you wanted to be a fulltime musician yourself, or did it maybe even help you to get closer to your goals?

GM: No need to be a musician at that time also if I was used to write and sing my songs to friends but, true.. searching for new music and for new records (it was really difficult in Italy years ago..) helped a lot to think on music in a different way.

MFM: In a different way, could you explain that a little maybe?

GM: Television, radio, newspapers.. only mainstream music, big names.. if you’d like to find something different or just exploring new sounds you have to travel a lot to find a nice record shop, or recording a lot of tape cassettes from friends’ records.

MFM: Your works consist of quite some collaborations, Gaussian Curve of course being one of them. Is there a specific reason for that, do you feel more inspired when collaborating?

GM: Isolation is absurd.. you have always to learn something, stay human.. Collaboration for me is essential, unique, for my music and for my spirit.. I’d like in the future to work with acoustic instruments, maybe a little orchestra.. there’s a lot to explore with electronics, love the idea to write songs for a beautiful voice, someday.

MFM: Quite a lot of your works got discovered and found a wider audience years after it was created. How do you feel about that? Do you think your story would have been different when you would have grown up elsewhere and some years later? 

GM: I think the music is not to be hidden in cages, let it go around and sometimes the music makes the difference between a grey life and a dream came true. Most of the music discovered in the past years was made only in vinyl and simply disappeared in the cd era. Only because hundred blessed dj became to dig for old and underrated music we are here, and not on the sofa just thinking on the past years.

MFM: Mille grazie for joining the MFM mix series, such a pleasure and honor to have you on board! For someone who used to be a professional radio DJ for years, did you have a specific idea or feeling or purpose before/while making the mix?

GM: MFM is always to be back home for me.. the mix is really what I’d like to listen in a sunny spring morning in Venice, while chatting and drinking with friends.
