In a [2011 New York Times article](https://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/23/magazine/the-fierce-imagination-of-haruki-murakami.html?pagewanted=5&ref=baseball), Murakami estimated that he owns 10,000 records, but was too afraid to count. Music is elemental to the atmosphere of the stories he creates, his works filled with quotations, references and inspiration from the music world; even entire novels are structured around musical pieces, as with 1Q84. 

In this Guide, NTS collects just a few of Murakami's classical references found in his novels.

For Sharp FM 024, Sharp Type partnered with our friends at Age of Reflections to present a mix by Japanese artist, musician, and producer Miho Hatori.

Miho made a mix that acts as a companion piece to her latest body of original music. Inspired by the legendary Hildegard Von Bingen and her concept of Viriditas, this music "is both a reminder and a release, a kind of play and an experiment in hearing Hildegard’s codes in another way," says Miho. "The Viriditas mixtape is a parallel path to the Viriditas project: tracks by artists I deeply admire, assembled as another way of listening. Like plants sprouting randomly through concrete, it follows the sideways, offbeat, sometimes askew logic of dreams — listening for resonances that emerge where we least expect them."

The mix’s cover and tracklist art feature a trio of Sharp Type fonts: Cordier Script, Sharp Serif Text, and a preview of Sharp Fraktur Bold. These typefaces bridge historical erudition with modern finesse, and their interplay highlights each font’s distinct qualities: Cordier’s sensuous strokes playfully abut the hard edges of Lucas’ unreleased Fraktur. Set large, set small, and set smaller still, we used the opportunity to flex the scalability of Sharp Serif Text, too. 

This mix has been released ahead of Miho’s October concert in New York City at Age of Reflections with John Carroll Kirby. To commemorate the occasion, it seemed appropriate to materialize this mix in cassette tape form. Together with Miho and the Reflections team, we produced a small run of tapes which will be available exclusively at the event.
