With the release of their self-titled debut album, Berlin-based Australian duo a.s.o. – made up of DJ and producer Tornado Wallace (AKA Lewie Day) and singer-songwriter Alias Error (AKA Alia Seror-O’Neill) – fleshed out their nostalgic, dreamy and trip-hop-skewing sound across 11 emotive tracks described as “torch songs for club freaks”.

Across their Sunday Mix, the pair untangle their knot of influences for an hour-long mix that features a selection of music they’d choose to listen to while “trapped inside on a rainy Berlin Sunday”.

Tearooms in post-revolution Czechoslovakia symbolised places through which new spiritualities were flowing, and the influx of largely uncharted ways of life closely intertwined with new age, ambient, folk and minimalism. With their minds altered thanks to smuggled records by Fripp & Eno or Steve Reich, this loose network of musicians had begun composing meditative music, using loops and handmade instruments, with a different sensibility. Compared to the boisterous Zappa-adjacent and booze-soaked underground movement, which was led by Plastic People of the Universe and provoked the state authorities, this music was meant instead for tea rooms and spiritual sites like churches or monasteries, as if occupying some place where time flows anticlockwise. "little sounds in huge expansive spaces"

This mix was my musical extrapolation of this quote. As I put together the tracks in the mix, the idea of small sounds in big spaces became more metaphysical, as a metaphor for memory and nostalgia. Small, seemingly insignificant events in our past can expand in significance over time, informed by our experiences later on in life, and with our emotions acting as a tool of reverberation, extending their presence in our lives far past their time of occurrence. What begun as a process of selecting tracks that quite literally feature "small sounds in big spaces" soon morphed into a dig into my distant past, to nearly 20 years ago when I first started learning to DJ. I pulled from the mnml tracks that had an important influence on my formative years, their impact can still be heard in the contemporary tracks I play today, all of them bouncing next to each other in this nearly 2hr musical collage.
