DJ TOBZY's half of a double-sided mix by two Nyege Nyege all-stars.

Nyege Nyege is synonymous with radical sonic innovation. Since 2015, the boundary-pushing Ugandan festival and its associated label have become a vital hub for adventurous, experimental sounds emerging from East Africa and beyond. Its alumni roster includes some of the past decade's most thrilling and forward-thinking artists—DJ Travella, Nihiloxica, Juliana Huxtable, MC Yallah, and even New York's mayoral frontrunner, Zohran Mamdani. In the process, the collective has reimagined what club music can be.

The enigmatic DJ TOBZY is one of the freshest voices in this ever-expanding ecosystem. At the tender age of 23 years, he's at the forefront of the effervescent cruise scene in his adopted hometown of Lagos. Breakneck, unpolished and fiercely DIY, it's a sound journalist Giulio Pecci described as "a delirious blur of vocals and drums, influenced by other African dance music styles but moving only to its own strange, internal logic." TOBZY's mix captures the frenetic energy of a scene evolving in real time—bold, street-born and completely unfiltered.

His contribution to RA.995 sits alongside that of Kampala-based Kampire, a core Nyege Nyege member since the label's inception, and she takes the B-side. 

Together, the two-sided mix forms the launch of a new series marking the countdown to RA.1000—offering a bracing snapshot of a collective that has redefined electronic music over the last decade.

Forward / Scratch presents: Long Play, a discussion platform for building a transformative model of nightlife rooted in liberation, community and artist-empowerment, and overcoming the extractionist and unsustainable nature of the scene as it stands. 

This project begins from a basic question: with the precarious state of nightlife, how do we create the scene we truly want? 

Hosted by Cat Tran and Erick Nidal, Long Play will adopt a community-driven model that crowdsources ideas to cover and the voices we’d like to hear.

About this episode

Could you ever own a nightclub? Why are we seemingly drowning in vacant luxury condos but even well-attended clubs are going bankrupt? Should the government play a role in supporting nightlife? What has New York City done recently to support nightlife? Who decides whether a nightclub gets to open or not? How can nightlife workers earn a living, and how can we leverage our day jobs to support nightlife? Are nightclubs even meant to last forever?

We spoke with DJ Tara, a pillar of the New York nightlife community both as a legendary musical curator and expert in urban planning and development. Tara grew up in the Haitian community of Flatbush and went to school for Engineering and Urban Planning. She’s worked in developing supportive housing for seniors and the unhoused, knows the ins and outs of city planning from her time working for the Manhattan Borough President, and was a contributor to the Global Nightlife Recovery Plan for COVID-19.

In the last few years, Miami has transformed into a hotbed of raw talent and one of its hallmarks is SEL.6, who also happens to be one of the finest artists originally out of Broward County. Jumpstarting her career with the widely revered and self-released Desire series and initiated into Miami’s scene via Space Tapes, the label that launched some of Miami’s most prized and internationally recognized dance music artists; she has woven herself into the fabric of the city’s underground telling the story of her Floridian identity and giving beauty and finesse to the sounds that encompass “Floridacore” in electronic music. Her productions are characterized by signature trancelike soundscapes, sampling inspired by a deep passion and respect for R&B, combined with crisp and powerful percussions while weaving between electro to breaks to hardgroove to jungle making her music perfect for any high ocassion and landing her onto labels like Allergy Season and Omnidisc. This energy transcends into the way she plays, always creating impactful and heavy dance floor moments cementing her as a gem in the city’s club culture. Truly a DJ’s DJ, a massive talent and a dear friend we have loved and watched grow alongside us. 

Secular Music is a sonic exploration rooted in Florida’s rich musical landscape. Blending 90's club influences, humid rhythms, emotive synths, and ethereally expressive textures. Blurring the line between the secular and the spiritual, the theme teases religious undertone, highlighting the irony of club music as both non-secular and deeply spiritual. Secular Music is a tribute to personal transitions, a deep connection to place, and the state’s vibrant music culture. The EP features Miami's own Coffintexts and a remix anthem by Miami Bass queen Jubilee.
