Mix 2: The Rise of The Ear Worms

@facta & @k-lone93 have been on a roll recently. Their Wisdom Teeth label has seen them put out not only excellent music from Tristan Arp, but also Facta's brilliant downtempo album Blush and K-Lone's recent Zissou EP. Both hail from London but are now Bristol-based and they mix up many of the different styles you'd expect from those two musical hotbeds. Everything from 2-step to Baltimore, post-dubstep to deep house gets distilled into their sets and productions, but always with well-swung drums and high-pressure bass. 

The pair kick off the New Year for us with a nimble mix that moves smoothly through glossy house depths, stripped-back broken beats and elastic rhythms. There is always a rich layer of percussion, sweet vocal or elegant melody burrowing deep into your brain while the beats keep your body happy. It's a perfectly persuasive listen that eases you off the sofa and back to the dance floor in no time.

Here is my mix for Bicep's FMB Mixtape series. The whole thing takes place within a range of 130 – 140 BPM and is dancefloor focused. I wanted to keep it cohesive and go energetic/heavier in parts. Plenty of unreleased tunes from me and my friends, and also lots of bassy four-to-the-floor bits that I’m playing atm alongside some older music and a tinge of techno stuff. Cairo-born and Berlin-based @alia-eliraki-434849195 has been an Awk Scl friend for a while. We always knew she has immaculate taste, this exquisite 1h mix goes to prove that point. 

Aptly oscillating between dreamy breaks, wriggly electro, tribal beats and entrancing melodies, Aalia provides exactly the right formula for a beautiful blend of emotional bangers that make us want to listen to this set on repeat.

It is with great pleasure that we present to you our 100th podcast. Over the course of the series we like to think we have mixed up big names with the stars of tomorrow; have shined a light on lesser known DJs who deserve the limelight and given pride of place to people with their own distinctive sounds. One such artist is Helena Hauff, the DJ turned producer who cut her teeth at the legendary Golden Pudel in Hamburg. Though she is a DJ first and foremost, her recorded material on labels like Werk Discs and Handmade Birds has never been less than arresting thanks to its dystopian blend of electro and techno moods and grooves.

This mix she has done for us is just the same: it is ninety minutes of elastic electro, popping techno and slithering electronics that are shiny and metallic, crisp and futuristic. It will push and pull you in many different directions but is all tied together by an infectious sense of slick robo-funk. Right up there with electro greats like Drexcyia and I-F, Helena Hauff is a suitably singular artist to helm this landmark podcast.

French Dj and producer Soraya Daubron aka Sentimental Rave found in gabber a way to “translate the violent energy of 1990-2000's French rap.” Based in Paris, she explores a large techno repertoire – from its trance fringes to its hardcore form – and participates in the greatest underground forces of the French capital. For i-D, she assembles the tunes that reflect her sound aesthetics the most and her love for rave culture : “the rave umbrella covers all the sounds that attract me. It is also a movement that gathered people who were not necessarily made to be with each other.”

To celebrate the release of her new single Princess of Manifestation, NYC-based Chinese performance artist @alice-longyu-gao has made a fun, sun-kissed mix to see you through the weekend. “This mix is for summmmer!
