It's time to take a trip with Cult 48. 

After listening to their incredible debut Catalog 1 (C48/Furthur Electronix) and their follow up 1.1 (C48) we were adamant to get the mysterious Cult 48 included in the mix series. Their production fuses ambient, downtempo and IDM with blissful chords and deep rhythmic drums that will transport you away. This is clearly reflected in the mix that they have provided here.

Ambient Sessions # 99 - Alessandro Crimi

Such a pleasure to host ANNX on this month’s show. This guest mix has has been a long time coming, after playing for her at WHOMP back in June 2022 and having her on our very first tentacular party line-up here in Paris. 

ANNX is a wonderful & vibrant DJ but also a lovely human being. She is the mother of WHOMP - a non-profit charity party in London that she co-runs with another absolute boss Lora Mipsum. 

She also runs a new party series with a more psychedelic twist with Amphybian, called MAGICK. If you’re ever in London make sure to check out both as they rock, both in terms of vibes, crowd and line-ups.  

Anna sent over a few words words with her mix : « Whilst prepping for the show I wanted to hone in on the slower more mysterious and deeper side of my music taste. Expect an hour of minimal and deep techno with some organic percussions, bubbles and twangs telling a story with increasing energy and intrigue. Perfect listening for the winter months.

a. My name is Ian Baxter and I produce music as DJ Birdbath and am currently based in the sunny top of New Zealand's south island.

q. is there a story behind the mix?
Not as such, I just tried to go with my first impulse for the song choice.

q. what's the best way to enjoy your mix?
I reckon it's best enjoyed in a comfy place with some headphones maybe on a bus or train.

q. describe a favorite object in your living room...
Definitely the pile of comfy pillows a friend made covers for from an old wall hanging. I've been making lots of music and this mix whilst nestled amongst them.

q. are you working on any projects right now (music or not music)?
I'm always working on bits of music and samples and am very excited for my EP to come out on APPX: ( @appendixfiles ) on the 24th of March.

Chrysalism is the feeling of amniotic tranquility of being inside during a rainstorm, listening to waves of rain pattering against the roof like an argument upstairs, whose muffled words are unintelligible but whose crackling release of built-up tension you understand perfectly. In this mix i wanted to channel the storm itself, from the first gentle droplets to the chaos and freneticism at its peak.

This is a love story from a festival rather than a club, but at Houghton last year I was helped by a girl whilst looking for a friend in the crowd. I ended up sitting down with her and got chatting for ages whilst listening to Vladimir Ivkovic. We exchanged numbers, went on a friend date a few weeks later, and have been hanging out regularly since.

@secretsundaze party at the Cause - this was actually my first Secret Sundaze party and my first time at the new Cause venue. The energy was so high, the music was sublime all night, and every single interaction I had was so genuine and lovely, I was buzzing for weeks after.

@garcon @deep-mind-music mix. I listen to a lot of deep, broken, often pretty intense and hectic dance music. This mix is the antidote, it takes me into a calm and meditative place and gosh some of the tracks are beautiful.

I grew up in a house where there was always music and dancing. Both of my parents influenced my music taste infinitely - both of them have a really unique music taste: ambient, spiritual, soulful and poetic in spades. I feel like there’s always more to hear and learn because of this, and I also am reminded to always be open to new sounds.

I’ve always enjoyed doing warm-ups. In some hypothetical dream scenario where I could play for any party at any club & choose my slot, I’d choose to do the warm-up.

I find watching a room fill up & laying the foundations for an entire night &/or day of partying is often the most satisfying experience you can have as a DJ.

Sometimes I think there can be a bit of a narrative that you have to ‘play it safe’ during the early hours of an event, but I actually often think the opposite. I think as long as you get the mood right, you’re free to play some of the most interesting music.

I'm gonna go for @achterban - They’re not tied to a particular sound but instead always combine DJs from all different genres throughout their programming. Their event production is always great, they bring a lot of visual art & lighting installations to the club to good effect.

Oh there are loads, how can I just pick one? @yopoono is always impressive. Every time I listen to him I always think he’s really good at getting his tracks in the right order. Sounds simple I guess but it's probably the most important thing to get right haha.

Earlier this year I went to Golden Pudel for the first time.

What a club. It’s really got everything you want imo. Small room, low lighting, cracking system & a crowd full of people really into their tunes & up for having a good time. 10/10, would Pudel again.

It doesn’t feel competitive. There are a lot of creative people doing a lot of cool things but, in my experience at least, it’s never felt like they’re fighting for their own space. People are open to collabs & support each other’s endeavours.

Far too many to choose from but the first time I saw DJ Sprinkles will always stand out. She has this whole different way of thinking about what a DJ set can be. I’ve never heard anyone else do it like her.

The last one that really left its mark was Floid on @woodyninetytwo Neon Cleptu show on @lyl_radio. Crazy tunes, expertly blended. Out to Marco for putting it on at work!

I lived in Helsinki for a year & went to @clubkaiku near enough every weekend whilst I was there. Something about that place & the way it’s run, the way the booth is built, the soundsystem & the crowd of regulars that attend, it always seemed to bring the best out of the DJs that played there.

The whole scene in Helsinki is really top notch. It’ll always have a special place in my heart.

Also, memories of going to the @hessleaudio residency at @fabric when I was 18/19. Truly transformative experiences.

The goal of this feature and accompanying mix was to create a journey of escapism and comfort. Whereas the previous Portals feature, ‘Music For Sleeping’ could be deemed very similar, the approach here focused on keeping an attentive layer/s that ended up being more pure to Brian Eno’s definition of ambient music: “As ignorable as it is interesting”, which actually aligns very well with the definition of what it means to be mindful; "the quality or state of being conscious or aware of something”.
