Over two decades in dance music have made Hoj more than capable of living up to his reputation as a sonic storyteller. His cinematic sets explore the deep house landscape with a fervor that resonates through dance floors across the globe.

Close colleagues like Lee Burridge simply refer to his style as “Hoj house” rather than attempting to pin down its eclectic nuances. Although a longer road, staying the course of his artistic vision has paid off. In addition to a residency and landmark releases on Burridge’s All Day I Dream imprint, he now provides a platform for like-minded producers by way of their joint venture, Tale and Tone.

An extensive background in the visual arts set Hoj (pronounced with a long Ō) on a path less traveled by the average DJ/producer. Born in Iran and raised in the Bay Area of the U.S., he grew up exposed to film and music alike. Prior to DJing full time his background was in film, design and new media. He was the brainchild behind All Day I Dream’s brand identity, coming up with the single cloud design.

Hoj also discovered electronic music early in life. He attended his first rave in San Francisco in the early 90s, and he experienced the inauguration of legendary warehouse venue Homebase. After DJing for a few years, he made his San Francisco debut at Qoöl Happy Hour, an event series that took place at 111 Minna Gallery.

Soon afterwards he got involved with outfits like Opel Productions and Spundae, which afforded him audiences at the city’s more prominent nightclubs. He went on to help build the inaugural Opulent Temple sound camp for the 2003 edition of Burning Man. He has performed annually at the transformative gathering ever since.

Upon moving to New York City in 2008, however, Hoj outgrew the category of local DJ. Each passing year after that point brought bigger milestones and more momentum.

After his set on the Robot Heart art car during the 2010 edition of Burning Man, he was booked at the world-famous Berlin nightclub Berghain’s Panorama Bar. 2011 saw Lee Burridge launch All Day I Dream to serve the dual purpose of a record label and event brand, and he enlisted Hoj as a resident DJ of the latter. Since then Hoj has brought dance floors to life across the globe. Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York City account for much of his fan base, but his following has also grown significantly in locations like Canada, Mexico, Australia, South Africa, Dubai, Romania and London.

2017 marked two especially groundbreaking turning points for Hoj: His long-awaited debut as a producer and the unveiling of he and Burridge’s new record label, Tale and Tone. The label features music the founding DJs play at night, unique tunes with both story and groove. Around the same time, his own Telefade EP, released on All Day I Dream. The three-track EP included  “Leap Day” as well as a remix of the title track by Bedouin. Hoj followed up Telefade with his own Tale and Tone release in 2018. Titled “Ramblefog,” it appeared on the imprint’s Prologue compilation,.

Two decades of experience behind the decks have equipped Hoj to captivate any crowd. The twists and turns of each sonic journey almost surprise him as much as those he entertains, resulting in moments that make up unforgettable memories. Given his track record, it’s surely no accident that his audience has only grown over the years.

As far as his own story is concerned, a promising future lies out on the horizon for Hoj. Deep house enthusiasts far and wide are excited to see how his tale will unfold.

Aaron-Carl
Producer, Remixer, Singer/Songwriter, DJ…        

It is a task Aaron-Carl has done consistently since 1996.  As one of Detroit's most in-demand producers & sought-after remixers, his signature sound crosses genres -- from soulful, gospel-infused House, to the dirtiest ghettotech anthems.

Armed with little more than a cheap keyboard & a four-track cassette tape recorder, Aaron-Carl proved early on that he could hold his own in Detroit's Electronic Music Scene.  When a demo tape landed into the hands of Underground Resistance's "Mad" Mike Banks, Aaron was quickly signed to Banks' Soul City record label.  Even then, Aaron refused to be boxed into one genre.  His first two records were released at the same time:  "Crucified," a soulful deep house vocal, and "Wash It," a cheeky underground club banger.  While both records received great critical acclaim, it was "Down" (an explicit electro-house track on the B-side of "Wash It") that became -- and remains one of Aaron's biggest records to date.

Ron Murphy (NSC Mastering) and "Mad" Mike Banks were strong mentors during that time.  "It wasn't enough for me to write great songs," Aaron says.  "They taught me how to make great RECORDS…" Aaron compares their guidance to boot camp.  "They saw my potential, and wouldn't accept anything less than my best."  He describes, "Mike held meetings with all the producers on the label.  He'd play the hottest tracks at the time, and would challenge us to go home and do better."

When the opportunity came to remix label mate Theresa Stringer's "Round and Round" single, Aaron jumped at the chance.  Though it was very first official remix, it earned Aaron a reputation for what has become his trademark "Wallshaker" beats. 

Aaron-Carl launched his own Wallshaker imprint in 1998 - named after his final 12-inch on Soul City. "Closer" - Aaron's first Wallshaker project, was licensed by Whirling Records (US), but was never released.  His third single, "My House," caught the attention of Philadelphia house label, Ovum Recordings.  The song got licensed and went on to become Aaron's first Billboard Top 40 Dance/Club hit. 

Cementing his powerhouse status in Detroit Electronic Music, Aaron-Carl has remixed some of the Motor City's biggest artists, like Underground Resistance, SCAN 7, Kelli Hand & AUX 88. He has also remixed International artists like Chicago House legend Dajae, Icelandic techno stars Gus Gus, and African jazz great Manu Dibango, to name a few.  Aaron's productions have graced various labels throughout the world, including Subject Detroit, Metroplex, Kompakt, Sirkus and Universal France.  He has also been remixed by some of the industry's top producers, like Ewan Pearson, Doc Martin and Grammy award winner Peter Rauhofer (Club 69). 

Two of Aaron's deep house tracks -- "Sky" (a tribute to his late father) and "Oasis" are featured in the internationally acclaimed House music documentary, "Maestro" by Josell Ramos.

Aaron also holds his own within the Hip Hop community -- particularly among the LGBT Hip Hop circles. Most notably producing hits for legendary rapper Johnny Dangerous, his remix of the infamous "Topsy Turvy" - in which he makes a cameo appearance -- is featured in the Alex Hinton documentary, "Pick up the Mic."

Owning and overseeing the successful Wallshaker Music label plus heading his own music publishing company, Symphonic Storm Music Publishing, Aaron-Carl proves himself as a definite force to be reckoned with - and shows no signs of slowing down.

Having met through the Three of a Perfect Pair Music Camp in 2011, bassists Julie Slick and Marco Machera started collaborating in April 2014 to play a short run of shows in Tuscany, after Julie's European tour with The Crimson ProjeKCt. Very spontaneously, some brand-new songs were written during a couple of days rehearsals and played to very appreciative Italian audiences. The impromptu ‘bass duets’ ended up being so satisfying and well-received that Julie and Marco eventually decided to write more material together and record an album. Nearly one month later, “Fourth Dementia” was completed. It's not quite what one would expect from a couple of traditionally low end instruments; the recording reinvents the role of solo electric bass and brilliantly displays the songwriting abilities of the duo; it's a captivating combination of loop music, ambient soundscapes and interlocking bass patterns, always melodic yet aggressive and edgy at times. 

The bass guitar has a prominent role throughout the record, however more tracking was provided by acclaimed drummers Eric Slick and Pat Mastelotto, and violinist extraordinaire Sarah Anderson.

"Fourth Dementia" was promoted with a short tour of the east coast of the USA in January 2015, with concerts in Washington DC, Baltimore, New Jersey, Philadelphia and New York City. Julie and Marco were joined on stage by special guests Pat Mastelotto on drums (King Crimson, Mr. Mister, XTC, David Sylvian) and Philadelphia-based guitarist Tim Motzer (Ursula Rocker, David Sylvian, Secret Rhythms). 

At the same time, the duo completed the recording and production of their second effort, "Le Fil Rouge", also with the help of their fan base, contributing to a fundraiser on Kickstarter. Machera says: "I feel this record marks a real leap forward for us. I still love Fourth Dementia and its spontaneity, but I'd say that Le Fil Rouge sounds a lot more organic, diverse and sophisticated." The album undoubtedly adds more layers to the sound palette of the duo: most of the songs were built around heavier riffs, with a strong emphasis on groove and occasional hints at dub bass lines, jungle and trip hop rhythms. "We also wanted to have more vocals this time", says Machera, who sings on "Mirror Writing" and "Die in Dust". 

Afenginn, aka composer Kim Rafael Nyberg, is one of the leading voices of Scandinavian neo-folk, known for his ambitious orchestrated works. Some would say what defines this artist are his seemingly mercurial creative impulses, as each of the 6 full-length albums have been clear departures from the last. However on closer inspection one finds Nyberg has been steadily and meticulously developing a musical language that is based on the same fundamental investigation - how to combine nearly familiar motifs with asymmetric rhythmic and harmonic developments so as to guide the listener into a dusky borderland rife with epistemological shape shifting. Common in his compositions is the use of minimalistic patterning (akin to the techniques of Philip Glass and Arvo Pärt), which fluctuate between creating a tidal propulsion and a sense of austere fragility. This is consistently contrasted against epic post-rock swells that are both sensual and disbanding. For the greater part of Nyberg’s career his albums, and the concerts that have accompanied these releases, have been through-composed. For the same reasons that Radiohead is sometimes labeled as prog, Afenginn can also be put into this camp for the way the emotional arc is designed to build across a whole performance. Themes and grooves expand across songs and the instruments are orchestrated to continuously shift roles, all which effectively pulls the audience into the band’s otherworld. Though it’s clear Nyberg’s artistic temperament is decisively independent and uncompromising, what sets his music apart from many fellow iconoclasts is a tendency for his writing to be imbued with warmth and compassion. One leaves an Afenginn concert feeling that they have feasted at the table of a most gracious host, filled by courses rich with untamable longings. 

Latest Release:
The latest Afenginn work, Opus is a chamber pop symphony in four movements, each with its own distinct color and mood, from dreamy to explosive. With an ensemble of violin, mandolin, clarinet, trombone, marimba, cello, and drums, all subtly contorted by electronic effects, Nyberg ties together his far-flung influences of nordic folk, contemporary classical, and post-rock music with ingenuity and grace, creating a fiercely imaginative piece. Primarily instrumental, each movement of Opus pivots around a near-apocalyptic text sung by Ólavur Jákupsson and written by Nyberg’s childhood friend Timo Haapaniemi in an invented language playfully based on Latin.
