This video honors Dr. Lillian Harvey Banchik, volunteer surgeon for the Medical Reserve Corp in San Diego, CA and past president of the National Board for Nutrition Support Certification (NBNSC). Dr. Banchik talks about the evolution of nutrition and its vital impact on patient recovery. She feels there is a lack of respect for nutrition as a specialty, which she believes is caused by a lack of nutrition education for physicians. She shares her personal story on how forcing herself to eat the right foods allowed her to successfully get through chemo and radiation for cancer without missing a day of work. Dr. Banchik also provides advice for junior faculty members.

Blenderized Tube Feedings: Practice Recommendations from ASPEN (Sections 1 and 4)

This podcast features Dr. Venkatesan who is faculty within the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition at the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio. Dr. Venkatesan reviews emerging trends in cannabis use and the impact on various parts of the gastrointestinal tract that sparks concern for gastroenterologists.  She reviews endocannabinoid systems to highlight the metabolism of cannabinoids. Dr. Venkatesan concludes with the need for human research to clarify any benefit on human health.

Cannabis Use in the United States and its Impact on Gastrointestinal Health (NCP)

In this podcast, Guest Editor Dr David Evans interviews Dr. Savas Tsikis, lead author of the paper “Fat Malabsorption in Short Bowel Syndrome: A Review of Pathophysiology and Therapeutics” published in the April 2024 supplement of Nutrition in Clinical Practice. Dr Tsikis is a surgical resident at Beth Israel Deconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School.  He has been working in the laboratory of Dr. Mark Puder at Boston Children’s Hospital where they investigate the impact of fat malabsorption on their patients with short bowel syndrome and are developing treatment strategies to address fat malabsorption and improve outcomes.

Fat Malabsorption in Short Bowel Syndrome-New Understanding of Mechanisms and Treatment Strategies

The June 2024 podcast features Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, Dr. Terry Brown who holds a position as the Medical City Healthcare Clinical and Dietetic Internship Program Director which is located in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Brown shares her passion for blenderized tube feeding and her desire to promote awareness and education on the use in clinical practice.  She reviews the development of a survey tool that was administered to adult and pediatric RDNs associated with ASPEN. The results overwhelmingly supported RDN’s desire to support the use of blenderized tube feedings, but more education was desired.

Knowledge of Blenderized Tube Feedings Results from a survey of ASPEN RDNs

The August 2024 podcast features Registered Nurse, Dr. Sandra CItty who holds a joint position as a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Florida College of Nursing in the Department of Family and Community Health Systems and faculty in the Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center at the North Florida South Georgia Veteran’s Health System in Gainesville Florida.  Dr. Citty shares her passion improving system-based medication and nutrition administration to reduce patient safety concerns.  She reviews the results of her teams inquiry into the National Center for Patient Safety Joint Patient Safety Reporting System to understand sources of patient safety concern related to enteral nutrition prescription, administration, and monitoring.  Her discussion clearly hihglights the need for clinician to act within their own institutions from an interdisciplinary perspective.
