Mixpak is proud to present the first in a series of EPs from UK producer Murlo. Now a forerunner in the crowded and inspiring British underground, Murlo is known for his melodic imagination, his ability to make “music visual” and his trademark ability to expertly weave a number of elements from the contemporary UK club story. 

Though most recognized for his instrumental offerings in 2014, Murlo adds yet another string to his bow in 2015: his Jasmine EP for Mixpak is his first, full original vocal release, featuring up-and-coming Irish vocalist Gemma Dunleavy. Threading together influences from RnB, grime, dancehall and pop, the EP sits nicely in the UK tradition of female vocal underground records. The elusively-titled “Jasmine” hints at a dancehall riddim, with Murlo’s synths and piano lines serving as a powerful counterpoint to the emotional longing of Gemma’s songwriting. On the flip, “Deep Breath” reaches for a spacious but often intricately layered backbone that toys with sino-grime and wistful melodies, as her almost masochistic storyline takes the forefront. 

Despite different BPMs and sound palates, Murlo & Gemma Dunleavy manage to strike a delicate balance, maintaining an emotional and sonic thread throughout. This is new terrority for Murlo, but still familiar ground for his fans; his signature sound now comes with added catchy choruses. Constantly surprising, always progressing and forever adept as a producer, we’re excited for our coming projects with Murlo and this is a strong start.

After a first EP from BNJMN, new Creme Organization label off shoot Jericho One now serves up a second release, this time from NOFACE. This is a moniker of Mella Dee, a producer who in the last few years has released rough house tracks on labels like Lobster Boy, Digital Soundboy and Omena. Here he offers three new pieces that show a passion for high energy, lo­fi tracks with inventive grooves.
‘Saturate’ is littered with old school signifiers but is essential a brutal, high power techno banger with immovable kick drums, slithering percussive patterns and fiery vocal ad libs that imbue the track with a sense of afro­futurism. ‘Polar’ is a similarly physical track with massive, monstrous kicks, reverberating synth lines and a barreling sense of groove that washes over you like a braking wave. Finally, ‘Warrior Charge’ is another physical and functional cut with robust drums, oversized hi hats and woodpecker like hook that demands you stomp and head bang from start to finish.

This 12“ edit is cut on the A-side.

On the flip, DJ Deep & Roman Poncet rework Carl Craig’s remix, adding their signature grooves and myriad of tough drums, to full effect.
