Tucker & Bloom Presents: Welcome to New Orleans mixed by Personify

Welcome to New Orleans: A tribute to New Orleans Funk and Soul is the work of New Orleans native, DJ Personify. Raised in the Crescent City, the die-hard Hip-Hop fan learned early on that many of the samples he discovered originated in New Orleans. He soon became infatuated with the Funk and Soul music recorded there and has spent the better part of the last twenty years immersed in the culture of those records. Personify’s passion for New Orleans' music and culture extends to the present day and is manifested in this DJ mix masterpiece. Lovingly compiled, all of the artists featured on the mix are native to New Orleans with the exception of Hugo Montenegro who plays alongside Al Hirt (a New Orleans native) and The Headhunters, who are included here because of their work with Bill Summers (a life-long New Orleanian). All songs and samples used on this mix were recorded from vinyl sources. Longtime friends and musical collaborators Max Essa and Eddie C just joined the RNT fold, with their new 4-tracker of melancholic and exquisitely produced chilled out disco.

Begun as a lockdown project, the 'We Live In The Hills' EP explores a vast palette of sonic soundscapes, from the shimmering guitars and acid lines of Melon Stepping, to the insistent rolling bass and whimsical synths of Save Me, the deep funk of the EP’s title track, and the late nite driving soundtrack stylings of Sixth Bridge. This EP tells a hopeful story of emerging from isolation and doubt, like a lovely musical sunrise after a long dark night.

To celebrate the release, Max Essa hopped on his decks in Tokyo to make his RNT Podcast debut! He shifts through many of the tones that inspired 'We Live In The Hills', as well as material from the EP itself, while harnessing records from friends & family around the globe for 90 minutes of bliss.

This week on Topshelf we are delighted to have with us Greek DJ/Producer, Mayday.

A fusion producer who is able to incorporate a huge variety of genres into his work, Mayday has been releasing tracks since 2019 with his beautiful deep house debut 'Wind & Sun' which truly is a work of art, focusing on rising synths that harmoniously build alongside wonderful percussion to create a mesmerising soundscape, one of which that garnered remixes from Alexander Tomas & Tilemachos. 

2020 saw the second wave of the budding artist's work with the releases of 'No Time Left' the natural successor to his debut, a hearty deep house record with plenty of soul. We were also treated to 'A Place With No Gravity' & 'Dreamy Dub' with the latter playing gracefully like a love song to the trance piano led trance tracks of the late 90's.
After some further experimentation in the genre with a collection of vocal deep house tracks in '18 Χρονών Για Πάντα' with Libys as well as the 'Dance Into The Night' EP with GREGØ, we start to hear the subtlety of something darker starting to emerge.
In the 'Introspection' EP, Mayday reverts back to his first release in the sub genre of deep house he's working within but each tracks intro foreshadows the darker horizons ahead with his now signature basslines and percussion, this EP is one of our favourites and highlights some unbelievable production as well as giving us 4 absolute corkers in the title track, 'World Of Us', 'Paradise In Your' & 'Loneliness'.
From there Mayday has grown from strength to strength, fluidly moving through genres, being able to release gorgeous ambient albums like 'Lysistrata' as well as heavy releases on Disco Suicide.
 
Now fresh off the back off a glorious 5 track EP 'VGTXM' which released yesterday, Mayday has demonstrated unbelievable variety whilst always delivering and in doing so created a rich back catalogue that takes the listener across all seven seas of the electronic world and drops you wherever he wants to go. The EP contains rave inspired, acid led monsters like 'Sugar High', 'Short It Out' & 'El Capitan' alongside Italo led risers like the title track and the house stomper 'Aye' with DJ Asterix.

This week on Topshelf we’re delighted to have with us, one of our artists of the year in Japanese resident and balaeric champion, Max Essa.


Having been producing and DJ’ing since the 90’s, Max Essa is both a Dj’s Dj and a Producers Producer with class oozing out of his record collection, as well as through his body of work which has seen it supported by the likes of Andrew Weatherhall & David Mancuso. 

With a highly unique style often blending elements of ambience, soul and funk, his early releases like ‘2 be the one U like’, ‘Uptown Vibration’, ‘Caress’, ‘How Do U Feel?’ & ‘Water Business’ perfectly encapsulate the rebirth of a sound lost since the 80’s, utilising rich, deep synths, airy guitars, slapping baselines and infectious piano chords to mold his distinctive sound.

2024 has seen Max Essa continue his never ending golden era with 4 EP’s including the release of the beautifully crafted ‘We Live in the Hills’ with Eddie C which is in our opinion, the EP of the Year, with the record playing like an instrumental to a lost Fleetwood Mac album with hints of Crazy P. Genius and genuinely some of the most inspiring work we’ve heard this year, from an EP we will never stop listening to.
This year also saw a wonderful collaboration with Berlin based Englishman David Harks on ‘The Clean Trip’ EP, an moodie, indie dance release showcasing Essa still knows exactly how to work a vocal with every tracks ‘Plastic Bones’, ‘Magic Eyes’, ‘Blind Horizons’ & ‘Lobster Boys’ all being a certified moonlight anthems.

Now with a mix for us which delivers in full, we are delighted to present Topshelf 0128 with one of our Artists of the Year in Max Essa. Enjoy.

The Library LMD Presents Topshelf 0130 w/ Deserted Island

This week on Topshelf we’re delighted to have with us Brazilian DJ/Producer Zanelato.

A master of the edit, Zanelato has been producing under his moniker since his 2020 version of Ray Phiri’s ‘Play that sax’. 

This early work would be the first demonstration of Zanelato’s style of groove, calling back to the soulful production of the late 80’s / early 90’s as further showcased on his next release. A remix of JND’s ‘Dub in Paris’.

One of Zanelato’s biggest merits is celebrating Latin American music and his next string of edits would do just that, with glorious edit’s of Paula Santoro’s ‘Só Você E Eu’ and Afrodite Se Quiser’s ‘Vida Ferida’, introducing us in the West to a range of artists undiscovered. 

Zanelato’s latest run see’s him put a 90’s spin on The Beloved’s classic ‘The Sun Rising’, MC Eddy’s ‘Quero’, Margareth Menezes’ ‘Elegibô’ and Angélica’s ‘ O Meu Jeito De Ser’.

This week on Topshelf we're delighted to have with us Hungarian Tech House DJ & Producer, Vitus.

With a vibrant career that only began in 2024 and to those who know his work, Vitus is an extremely impressive tech house producer, releasing a multitude of singles, as well as an EP all in his debut year.

His 'Luxx' EP is one of the most enjoyable tech house records we came across in 2024, with 'Bring it on' being a summer corker, fitting for any motive once the sun reveals itself. The title track shows off Vitus' quality in his production, with glorious strings and a minimal tech house under belly that gives us one of our favourite tracks within the genre, an understated classic. 'Closed Doors' closes out the EP with it's synth flare and percussive prowess to make this a highly impressive debut.

His latest track 'Bob Jamz' fittingly does exactly what it says on the tin, in fact it's impossible 
not to have a bob to. Utilising funky piano notes and basslines, on top of breaks samples to give us another track that never rushes any of its components and carries on the trend of top quality tracks, in a genre that needs some new life blown through it. Vitus is that guy.

This week on Topshelf we’re delighted to have with us, all the way from Germany, Harry Nipples.

With a superb start to 2025 playing at Katernacht alongside the likes of Bryan Kessler, M-High and Bambi S, Harry Nipples is a euphoric treat to the ear drums.

With her sets aesthetically celebrating the 80’s, serving out glorious synths, pulsating basslines and piano grooves, Harry Nipples is truly a fantastic representation for Italo.

‘Dance Now’, Harry Nipples original track with fellow Berliner jo.desaga is an italo DJ’s dream, giving us 90’s inspired trance vocals alongside dreamy signature piano keys and a superb bassline that is impossible not to throw down to. Anthem.

With a crackin’ mix for us incorporating Italo and Soul and perfectly showcasing the artists exceptional mixing and track selection, serving it all up on a wave of 80’s emotion. We couldn't be happier to bring the groovin' delights of Harry Nipples. Enjoy

Topshelf is back after a short hiatus throughout the essay period, but we are back and proud to bring you a fresh new mix from DJ / Producer, Queen of Coins.

With a self titled debut album releasing at the end of 2024, Queen of Coins has started there production career off with a bang, with the record featuring an array of corkers, including the ever evolving ’Summer Card’, which analogically delivers a wonderful start to the record.

Other highlights include ’Bring It To The Top’ , ‘Damaged Souls’, ‘Oreo Cake’ and ‘Head Tension’ which all carry the signature pulsating baselines, giving us a juicy italo core accompanied with beautiful synths, all harking back to 80’s nostalgia.

This week on Topshelf we’re delighted to have with us Bristol based, Deep Tech DJ/Producer, Alexisitry.

With a multitude of accomplished formats under her belt, Alexisitry has a SWU.FM show, whilst also being member of Bristols techno events team and record label, Flat 7, on top of heading up her own night, Alexisitry’s Cocktail Club. The next progression naturally for the impressive DJ was to start releasing music and 2024 saw the beginning of what looks to be an illustrious production career. Teaming up with fellow Flat 7 member Edetto for both the techno stomper ‘Where The Party At?’ and ‘Where the 1 At?’, which is a golden track for afters.

Joy Orbsion is someone we have a long and fruitful relationship with here at Dekmantel. He is, and always has been, a pure embodiment of UK dance music. His sound is steeped in English musical history (often explicitly in the form of sampled monologues) but also very much makes a new history of its own. He’s had countless underground hits from his definitive post-dubstep breakthrough ‘Hyph Mngo’ to his peak time tech tools with Boddika, and each one marks a mini reinvention of his style. What ties them all together, though, is O’Grady’s unique penchant for blending garage, bass, funky, house, techno and old school jungle into his own fresh concoctions. 

The two hour podcast he has served up here -as a perfect warm up to our festival this weekend- is split into two parts. Says the artist himself, “the first half is basically a way of showcasing producers that are doing great things at the moment and is completely made up of new, unreleased music, and the second half is basically winding things down with a load of stuff from my record collection. A come down, of sorts.” Starting with a spoken word snippet from his jungle playing uncle Ray Keith, the mix is initially atmospheric and moody, with sleek and stripped back drums and smeared synths making for a heady and intimate mood. After picking up through skewed bass patterns and skeletal techno, the second half seduces with elegiac rhythms, jazz selections and spoken word tracks as well as delicious soul sounds, reggae and stoned broken beat.  The results show exactly where Orbison is at musically, as well as offering an insight into where he has come from.
