New Drops 14/09/23

The "Λάθος μ΄έρως" ("lathos m'eros") episode is a mixture of field recordings along with various animal and human voices followed by narrations. Inspired by the artist book I present at AABF, I tried to link the "eros" (the artist book's title and theme) with hearing problems and speech. For me the phrase "lathos m'eros" means "error with eros" but in Greek is heard as "wrong place".

Το "Λάθος μ΄έρως" είναι μια μίξη από ηχοτοπία και μια ποικιλία από φωνές ζώων και ανθρώπων συνοδευόμενες από αφηγήσεις. Με αφορμή το καλλιτεχνικό μου βιβλίο "έρως", συνδέω τον έρωτα με την ομιλία και την βαρηκοΐα. Το "λάθος μ΄έρως", αν δεν είχε τη λάθος απόστροφο, θα μπορούσε να σημαίνει "το λάθος με το έρως" αλλά ακούγεται ως "λάθος μέρος".

Σε συνέχεια της εξερεύνησης στη γειτονιά, η Λουίζα, γεμάτη απορίες, επισκέφθηκε την πολυγλωσσική βιβλιοθήκη *We Need Books* και ρώτησε την Έμμα, την υπεύθυνη της Βιβλιοθήκης, όλα όσα ήθελε να μάθει. H Έμμα με χαρά δέχθηκε να ηχογραφήσουμε τις ερωτήσεις των παιδιών με τις απαντήσεις της κι έτσι δημιουργήθηκε η πρώτη συνέντευξη της Λουίζας με bonus track ένα παραμύθι: “Το βιβλίο που δεν ήθελε να διαβαστεί”.

How does the soundscape reverberate within our verbal performance, and vice-versa? How do we communicate our sonic experience through language? These two questions govern the logic of this mixed piece, composed from pieces of an interview by Ted and Eugenie, and field recordings from the maskoula rite, in Andros island, Greece.

Steps that define us and betray us, warn us or disorientate us, are imposing or surprising, steps that are provoking or silent, steps like keys on keyboards… An electronic profile of human steps. For ten days and during different times of the day, an in situ observation and systematic documentation of this activity in the interior spaces of the Old Jesuit Monastery and the exterior space of the mazy alleys of Ano Syros took place. By intensifying the possibilities of the footsteps, I used a variety of handy materials that I casually put in designated points of these two spaces. The sound performance "Behind The Obvious Sound" was presented at the Monastery in July of 2018 before closing the Sounding Paths 2018 residency.

Live Release was an open call for sound pieces from the time of the global COVID-19 pandemic and a framework for listening together. 

In this time of caring distance, of prohibited physical gathering, of an intensified workday for some, an online everyday or a pause for others, of differences (economy, work, racism, illness, access to healthcare, vulnerabilities), of increased isolation, of a globally shared virus, we asked: What sounds are you listening to; what sounds are you producing; what conversations are you having and what languages exist for this? More than 50 people in 21 countries from around the world responded.

The pieces were first broadcast on May 25th on The Lake Radio.

The project was organized by Jenny Graf and Kirstine Mose with support from The Lake Radio and Droplet Radio. Thank you to all the contributors from around the world!

Live Release – a listening convergence

This piece is a collage of improvisations of synthesizers, soundscapes, electromagnetic recordings and computer edits. It is an effort to create hybrid soundscapes with water as the main ingredient. Most of the recordings come from Lake Marathon. The piece has 5 parts:

The piece has been presented in Electric Nights/Radio Sessions on 5/7/2020 and parts III-IV-V in Electroacoustic Days 2020 organized by HELMCA on 13/12/2020.

Statement:

"All my life I move in space with my will for a guide. Space does not define me. It is I that Exist and create it..
Time on the other hand looks rigid, straight, strict and vindictive. I befriend it and it bends. It shatters into pieces and reveals its insides, its true nature; the one that it is ashamed to let become perceived.
Now Space, Time and Self walk together like in that old photograph I saw in my grandmother's house, depicting three sisters walking down the street dressed alike, holding each other's arm under the shadow of a Father, a God to walk with them; their leader, ruler and servant."
