In the four days after a lodge ceremony "something sacred wears us" and is shared in some way with everyone we come in contact with. This song began that way and swirled around for at least 13 moons before the finishing dream showed up. At the end of the dream a man in a chef's coat was sitting on the basement stairs and as I started to close the door without seeing him, he stood up with his arms open and sang " We got TO... have wisDom  in Everything we do----

Inner Knowing

Gratitude to Sara Brendel playing the ocean drum And honoring the water, Rachel  Waterhouse singing with me, Victoria Olmer on cello, and of course, Noah Proudfoot pulling it all together in his studio and singing along.

Jungian understanding of symbolism in fairy tales says that when the magic shows up, we know the Archtypal human patterns are in action. Sara had been digging out this spring in reality when she showed up in my dream. She had found many fascinating ancient stones and clay caches and manganese packed on a strike-a-light stone, in reality. In the dream she was finding a vein of citrine crystals and looking for a manganese ring in it. When she found the ring it was very ancient and broken but the pieces were all there. Then the first verse of the song showed up in the dream...

I shared it with Sara,  Victoria and Rachel that day and Victoria immediately knew the next verse. Then we needed a change in it and Rachel brought that in the third verse. After we all sang that much between rounds in lodge ceremony the prayer ending, in lakota ceremony language, came to us clearly. The fourth is always different in fairytales. The rain brought the vocables up the path from the spring one night as I offered sage and sweetgrass with gratitude. I knew the song was finished.

Brilliance of the Magic

I was feeling too tired to wake up and record the line that was the third vocable to show up in my dreams. A man wearing a yellow shirt and black pants stepped around a grand piano and stared into my eyes saying "This song is for the bees!" That woke me up immediately. Then I struggled to put it all together until I remembered the meaning of vowel sound teachings of Joseph Rael and grandmother Raven Hail writing about the Tsalagi sacred number teachings. As soon as I applied these ancient teachings to the vocables it all became magical. 

The dream said this song is for the bees !

Dreams: She's a young adult woman in a crowded sunny city on flat but high ground with trees, feeling secure in her ancestry and identity. Walking along with her Apache father who is middle-aged with long beautiful black hair pulled back, smiling in the sunlight. Moving pleasantly with crowds of people. She is confident in what she knows of herself and sees around her. She is wearing a white sweater and carrying something like maybe a shawl over her left arm.
They come to a crosswalk that takes her to return to her land. She steps into the crosswalk of white lines against black asphalt, with a 90 degree turn, as he continues on. She starts singing the song as I notice the shadows and interactions of ancestors around her. "See Comanche say Apache"... She seems very confident and happy to see both worlds in the way that she is able to. Rays of sunlight playing all around her and images of brown shadow figures thick amongst the people. The images move independently wearing feathers and scalp locks, carrying hachets, in deerskin.
Dream that morning of more lines: I'm with a young adult woman in my ancestral Tsalagi home where my mother was raised. We are working with a dream and heading outside to honor it with plant spirit offerings. She has a white rectangular bag with fringe on the bottom that is very beautiful. We go to a very familiar alter that we know is there for community and gathered as the plants offer themselves whenever we are in the woods and fields of this 50 acre farm. We take only what we need. I notice there is no furniture in the house. The old wood floors and solid stone foundation feel good around us. As she puts the plant medicine in the bag with some sticking out the top, I ask her how she can do it so easily? We go thru the door, onto the porch and start down the stone steps as we notice there are so many people out there, on the porch and in the yard as thick as the grass. A woman asks me "How do I know you so well?" and I hear the song lines "How do you get me like you know me? How do you know me so well?". The solid feeling of the stone steps and the people in the yard all felt good. As I finished recording the dream and fell back asleep I heard the chorus lines "print print, imprint"...
I told my indigenous women's circle, because it came the night of our regular circle meeting when we stir up magic. Another woman had dreamed the lines "listen to the heart surrender,..." the night before, her first dream of a song. A dream two weeks later came with the vocables and someone telling Joan to "be careful how you come into the song with this."  So she brought the line about loving ourselves...

Print Print Imprint...

When this dream song woke me up I wondered about the words "let me love at my size" and they came into my awareness in a very impactful way as soon as I associated them with the love that children share. It's easier to be in the zen practice of "empty mind' and 'not knowing' with dream experiences of songs. The timing of this dream was soon after I saw a request in August 2019 from Neil Young for new songs with the words of the children at the border. They emphasized "taking care of the children" in the drawings and reports I saw. Please sing it whenever you can and keep adding many language words for family and community concepts to the last four lines in the lyrics. Grateful to Noah Proudfoot for accompaniment and recording as well as singing along; grateful to Melissa for also singing along.

The vocables came this morning at 5 a.m. with a dream of being in a bathtub by a bay window with Joan sitting beside me in a chair looking tired as a doula. A brand new baby girl was held up for us by someone unseen. Her limbic area looked slightly green and I asked Joan if it was too soon for her to blow her nose. We all laughed and I called to someone (a woman in bed) in another room who was supportive saying "We birthed a baby girl and she'll always be here" . It felt like a joyful occasion. There was a man waiting outside the bay window, possibly an old boyfriend (30 years ago) from Beirut? Then I heard the vocables, woke up carefully and grabbed the recorder.

Sweet DreamTsalagi

Winter solstice 2018 we held ceremony initiating a clay pipe deer effigy made by Grey Antelope of the Pueblos in the early '90's and unfired until now. It was given to me at that time, on this mountain land, by a friend who has now completed his 32nd year of sundancing. He honored our community with the first pipe ceremony for this pipe. The next night this song came to me in the time between asleep and awake and wants to be shared with all in a heartbeat on the drum and in a thunderbeat with this pipe in ceremony.

At the time it first came to this mountain we did a pipe ceremony  asking the elk to return and buried a very old ceremonial elk horn pipe up on the southeast ridge. We have now held inipi kaga ceremonies on the mountain with an elk skin drum for over a decade and the magic has returned along with the honoring of the spirit of this ancient mountain. Sharing this with much love and gratitude to all who are a part of it, including the elk in the video who have returned to this motherland of our indigenous Tsalagi ancestors.

The song came in Lakota ceremony language and translates as:

My training in the classic empirical science of Jungian Depth Psychology includes many examples of common symbols arising in dreams, myths, fairy tales and stories of our lives across the world in many cultures. Psychology originated in indigenous medicine ways of healing our spirit as well as our body. My own Tsalagi Ancestral Experiences are steeped in these ways. My favorite grandmothers on both sides of the family were from Paleo villages that have archeological state verification going back to the beginning of the original wave of humans on Turtle Island. We have always lived within a few miles of our own ancestral lands. Due to dominant colonial oppression, our language remained illegal to speak until I was in college. It is my great fortune that they found safe ways to share the teachings exclusively with me.
