It's a song I made in front of a bonfire to remember my beloved sister. 
I layered the sound of a bonfire and a jazzy atmosphere.

It's a song I made at that time.

The inspiration for this track is a vision where I am not sure whether it is a faint memory from some childhood holiday or whether I have dreamt it  :
Standing on the edge of a rocky cliff, gazing out at the tumultuous ocean below. The waves crashing against the rocks with a thunderous roar, the force of the water sending a spray of mist and foam high into the air. In the distance a lone lighthouse
overlooking the scenery. A glimps of the power and majesty of nature and our own smallness in comparison. 

Composition-wise: The piece consists of three parts (@0:01, @0:59, @1:45) that always start with the same 5 note-motive but then develop into three distinct variations with different characteristics but throughout the track there is a certain sense of dramatic scenery.
The left hand is throughout the piece mostly in octave jumps (which became quite challenging condition-wise at the end of the piece) that segment the 4/4 beat into groups of 3-3-2 (the only notable exception is the part @0:35ff with its chromatic baseline).
The right hand alternates between lyric parts such as in the beginning or @0:59ff and rhythmic syncopic parts such as @2:30ff that leads to the final where the right hand preceeds the left hand by a beat to create a sense of energy.

The track has been recorded on a Roland FP-90 and mastered in Cubase by adding compressor, reverb, a Stereo enhancer and fiddling a bit with the EQ.

Evanescence: the quality of being fleeting or vanishing quickly, impermanence.
Oscar-Claude Monet (November 14th, 1840 – December 5th, 1926) was a French painter and founder of impressionist painting who is seen as a key precursor to modernism, especially in his attempts to paint nature as he perceived it. During his long career, he was the most consistent and prolific practitioner of impressionism's philosophy of expressing one's perceptions before nature, especially as applied to outdoor landscape painting.  In 1899, he began painting the water lilies that would occupy him continuously for the next 20 years of his life.  At his home in Giverny, Monet created the water-lily pond that served as inspiration for his water lilly paintings. Depictions of the water lilies, with alternating light and mirror-like reflections, became an integral part of his work.  By the mid-1910s Monet had achieved "a completely new, fluid, and somewhat audacious style of painting in which the water-lily pond became the point of departure for an almost abstract art.  He would ultimately make over 250 paintings of the Waterlilies.  In 1911, Monet began to develop the first signs of possible cataracts.  In the following years, his perception of color suffered; his broad strokes were broader and his paintings were increasingly darker.  He eventually underwent cataract surgery in 1923.  Now "able to see the real colors", he began to destroy canvases from his pre-operative period.  Upon receiving tinted Zeiss lenses, Monet was pleased with the results, although his left eye soon had to be entirely covered by a black lens. By 1925, his visual impairment was improved and he began to retouch some of his pre-operative works, with bluer water lilies than before.  Monet died of lung cancer on December 5th 1926 at the age of 86.  Although critical acclaim was slow in coming, Monet attracted the dedicated support of collectors throughout his career, most notably from Americans who discovered his work in the 1880s.  Monet's popularity soared in the second half of the 20th century, when his works traveled the world in museum exhibitions that attracted record-breaking crowds and marketed popular commercial items featuring imagery from his art.

Art Expressed in Music - Monet's Evanescence Feat. Oddrun Eikli

Yoshi & Chie are friends of mine from Osaka, Japan, where I lived for a year back in 2002-03. They now live here in Toronro, where I got to know them while busking together on the street, and jamming at my house with a few other friends. Here's a medley of music from that day:

Yoshi is an incredibly talented and super creative sitar player, sometimes playing with a violin bow, or with trippy electronic effects. He participated in a performance of Sgt Pepper's Lonely Heart Club Band full album re-enactment here in Toronto several years ago. Together with wife Chie, who plays didgeridoo, sings, and plays various percussion and electronic effects, they form the group Kaminari. Kaminari is a very popular act performing at various music festivals around Toronto, with shows now including dancing performances by their daughter.

This is a song from their early album Triangle, where I was honoured to be asked to play the drum (djembe) part - the only other artist on the album. 

Here's a video of a show they did a while ago to give you a sense of their stuff. I just like to plug them cause they're a super nice couple and a joy to play with.

Waltz for July

I was inspired to write this piece after having read a book called "Cilka's Journey" by Heather Morris, a true story about a young woman who survived Auschwitz.... (a more detailed explanation you will find on Musicar's page)
Julien Morency was so kind to add his own orchestration to it, which has really brought my piece to another dimension...
