Listeners who stumble upon Quebec-based band Whisky Legs’ debut EP, Have A Shot, will have more than a few good things to say about this release. Smooth, sensuous vocals, killer musicianship, and lots of fun will no doubt be among the high notes praised here. But, unfortunately for listeners worldwide, there’s one glaring flaw in this debut and that is that it’s only four songs long, leaving listeners on the edge of their seat for more.

Whisky Legs came to fruition in the St. Roch quarter of Quebec City, originally formed as the duo of lead vocalist Maude Brochu and multi-faceted instrumentalist and vocalist Pascal Denis. More recent days have seen guitarist Guillaume Méthot and bassist Louis Fernandez added to the fold, helping to round out the group’s center and bring the full sound they’ve been in pursuit of. That sound is one that draws from a mentality that culls the best from the 60s while connecting to the best of today as the band cites influences as diverse as Amy Winehouse, Led Zeppelin, Ray Charles, and many more.

Have A Shot is a quick four-beat of fun and flavor, the band showcasing multiple elements throughout each track that show their diversity and their talent along the way. Things literally “Hit the Ground Runnin’” with the opening track, Fernandez’s bass laying down thick lines of funk with tight guitar runs and kicking percussion. Add to that Brochu’s amazing vocals, rich and smoky, and you’re ready for more.

The next track, “Scarlet,” doesn’t fail to deliver, a killer blues groove opening the track up as Brochu seductively weaves her vocals in and out through the arrangement, singing of classic blues themes like love, cheating, and loss, poignantly offering, “I thought I knew you better/Till I saw that scarlet letter/Loved above all the others/Till I found out truths uncovered.” Further guitar licks simply accentuate the pain and passion in the lyric, pressing it forward with a powerful emotion.

If there’s any lull here on Have A Shot, it’s with the acoustic driven “Too Late.” Boasting a rather positive lyric that encourages listeners to live in the day, not constantly looking to tomorrow in life and relationships, the track is a warm acoustic romp that is solidly played and performed but that feels something of a letdown, particularly after the bright energy of the opening tracks. 

Yet, album closer “Bastard Child” rights any of those wrongs with a whole new set of acoustic blues licks and Brochu’s vocal at its most sensuous. The arrangement is dark and swampy, and listeners can virtually feel the humidity of the Mississippi Delta crowding in as the artist sings, “Mama said, never play with handsome devils/Little girl I’ve been there myself /Mama said, never lay with handsome devils/Little girl I’ve been there myself/Might keep you warm at night/But it’ll only be for a little while.” It’s a perfect ending to this quick, four-shot run of funk and blues.

Whisky Legs Have A Shot is more than just a promising debut from an up and coming band. Rather, it’s a shout to listeners everywhere that there’s a new game in town and it is taking place here and now. This powerful quartet is poised to make a big splash and if the Fates will have it, we’ll be hearing a lot more from Whisky Legs in the very near future.

ADDITIONAL ARTIST HISTORY:
Originally from New Jersey, growing up in the mid 80's, saw the rise of shopping malls and hair bands. It was a melting pot of music,  musicians and fashion. To either be in a band or be seen hanging out with a band was the coolest thing ever. On the local scene rising up in the shadows of Bon Jovi, Skid Row and Trixter alike was KINGS HAREM. Featured on WDHA and college radio WSOU, the bands notoriety took off at the start of the 90's with the vocal addition of Ruben Gomez who had just left Menudo. Known for their high energetic stage performances, 'we thrived on giving the audience a show remember'. Infamous for their after show pasta parties, the band members mostly Italian, were all home grown boys having the time of their lives. 

In the spring of 88' founding members John Crisci, guitarist and Jerry Capri, bassist, were both performing on the Jersey club circuit in various bands. Like most musicians they were involved in projects that often developed into something else. John fresh out of music college, meet Jerry from an ad in a paper called the 'Aquarian'. The two personalities hit it off to seek out a drummer to jam with. Performing at a local clubs doing cover tunes was drummer, Jon Orth. The following jam sessions were joined by Jon's closest friend, keyboardist, John Seput. 

The nucleus of Kings Harem was formed from those jam sessions with John Crisci assuming the lead vocals while the writing progressed. Performing gigs on the local club circuit to work out material and fine tune the show, the band realized it needed a front man to spark up the live performance engine. One night after passing out band promotion flyers on car windshields,  John Crisci stopped in a 7/11 coffee shop. There he meets Ruben Gomez at the coffee machine. Ruben had just left the pop band, "Menudo" we started talking and Ruben was invited to sing at the next gig covering the Bad Company song, "Rock Steady" and the rest was history. The energy of that performance was so cool we knew we had something. 

The band headed into the studio to cut their debut album with the newest addition to the line up, Ruben Gomez of "Menudo". It was spring of 1992 and we spent the year touring the east coast, promoting and working on a good 12 song album. The gigs were so much fun. It was easy to get caught up in the madness of backstage antics and front stage camaraderie. It was the stuff songs are made of if ya' know what I mean. We were talking with Sony back then, so it was time to concentrate on recording... We finished allot of stuff and mastered a handful to start with to feed to Sony. As fate would spin it, the 90’s grunge scene took off. ...we never signed with Sony. 

Currently as the music pendulum swings back to hard rock, the original line up has reunited to record their debut album, entitled "All Access Pass".

Ex- Menudo pop star and BMG recording artist, already famous with a long discography,  "I’m in a local Jersey 7/11 getting a cup of coffee. I go up to this guy, not knowing who he is and say, 'Hey! You look like a singer, I’m doing a gig this weekend. Do ya wanna jam?'  ...and that’s how we meet Ruben. We've been friends every since that day." -JC

JOHN CRISCI - Lead Guitar and Backing Vocals
A music major graduate, with 10 years of jingle sessions, film sound tracks, producing and engineering. We lived for the stage performance. Playing with all the Jersey greats, (you know who you are, some are dead), it was a close circle of friendships, musicianship and down right good fun!

JERRY CAPRI - Bass Guitar and Backing Vocals
A Bassist who plays his instrument like a lead guitar with the stage presence of a front man, what a combo. Right out of college radio, already a DJ personality, his charisma captivates the audience to make you wonder what is he going to do next? Never a dull moment...

JON ORTH - Drums, Percussion and Backing Vocals
You’d swear he had 4 legs and hands. His understanding of rhythm counterpoint and song arrangement really held us together. A well rounded session player, knew any style and how to compliment the song. A true showman and friend, plus he swings a mean hammer.

JOHN SEPUT - Keyboards and Backing Vocals
A technical wizard. Always knew how to pad and embellish the songs. From the tonal changes to complicated pretzel chord fingerings, he had it down. He also had the Rack of GOD! You’d swear the heavens were opening up when he laid into the keys. Once he took the stage, you knew KINGS HAREM was law.

The Crux

Alt Rock 5 piece from Sheffield, UK, who write & perform their own unique brand of edgy Riff- Rock fusing together a massive yet melodic sound with clever lyrics & in your face vocals. Inspired by the 90's Rock era and drawing on a diverse set of influences including; Red Hot Chili Peppers, Audioslave, QOTSA, NIN, Tool, Faith No More & Rage Against the Machine.

The Story So Far

The band were formed after three old school friends; Taylor (Vox) Andy & Ollie (Guitars) were re-united with Jow (Bass) during a stag do in Prague in the summer of 2011. After years of idle talk about forming a band they eventually bit the bullet and hit the rehearsal room in April 2012. Starting out playing a few covers to find their musical feet but quickly moving on to writing their own songs, songs built around Andy & Ollie’s guitar riffs and Taylor’s back catalogue of lyrics. After adding friend of a friend Lee on drums to the equation, and an initial 10 months perfecting their crime in the rehearsal room,  they hit the Sheffield gig circuit in March 2013.

Filling in at short notice they made an unexpected debut gig at MAGNA centre in front of 4,500 revellers, supporting top Rolling Stones tribute band ‘The Stones’. After a number of other gigs around Sheffields live venues they went on to support city stalwarts, blues rock outfit ‘Fallen Tree’s’, in a near sell out gig at Sheffield’s much revered ‘Plug’ venue proving their big Riff-Rock sound suits the live performance as well as the recording studio.
Following on from Plug their music was played on BBC Radio as well as other local and international stations including ‘Rock Radio’ and their first magazine article quickly followed in the form of a double page spread in one of the cities favourite glossy read ‘City Magazine’.
The band went on to play their Cities own ‘Tramlines’ Festival (the biggest ‘City Centre’ music festival in Europe), Sheffield’s legendary ‘Leadmill’ venue along with ‘SOLD OUT’ dates at the O2 Academy and the Corporation. 2014 promises to be an important year in the bands development; they are currently planning their first physical & digital record release, a UK tour and a whole load of other stuff including their first pro music video. It's not suprising then that they have recently started to attract the attention of promoters and are being offered slots at festivals around the country.
Their music is best described as 90’s inspired alternative hard rock, though through their own admission each band member draws on quite a diverse set of influences. You’ll probably be able to pick out a few obvious ones; Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Audioslave,  Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, QOTSA, NIN, Tool, Faith No More and even Rage Against The Machine but there are more subtle ‘nods’ to other bands, artists & genres, including more recently the hip hop fraternity.

In just 10 months gigging they have created a formidable musical alliance, doing exactly what they set out to do; write and perform interesting, creative, edgy, ballsy rock music, music they themselves would want to listen to. Though having to juggle band commitments along with everyday priorities of work and family life has seen them meander through 2013 like some kind of one eyed musical yeti; with a magnificent, intricately detailed and polished winkle picker for the ‘Rock Muso’ on one foot, and ‘Joe Publics’ sodden steel toe cap on the other!!

It is clear this band are still evolving but they clearly have a style they can call their own – they are clearly on a journey together and even they don’t know what’s coming next.  If they continue to climb the upward trajectory of their own steep learning curve in 2014, then expect many heads to turn!!
Music

Amongst the catchy foot tapping psychedelic swirl & rhythmic thump of ‘Intravenous’, one of the bands earlier songs, the dark lyrics and mumbled vocals could easily draw comparison to Joy Division, whilst their more recent track ‘Cyanide Smiles’, aside from the QOTSA style chugging of guitars, the chorus showcases a Nirvana-esque twang reminiscent of ‘Heart Shaped Box’.

Unpredictability in a band can be a good thing; it keeps things interesting and you just know this 5 piece are going to throw a few musical curveballs into the mix, but you can also be confident they are going to be on the money musically as well. Be ready to experience a nose grinding mixture of explosive intro’s, tempo changes, cutting throw away riffs, drops outs, harmonies and catchy vocal lines, all held together with clever fills, a melodic groove and a finely tuned, balanced sound; their set is clearly rehearsed to within an inch of its life and when the time comes these guys deliver with real attitude & an un-erring confidence.

The band are conscious not be so leftfield that they actually damage the musical content of their songs for the sake of art or whatever, their songs remain melodic. They are quickly becoming a beast of an animal, constantly evolving, patiently waiting, absorbing their surroundings and environment, probing the local music scene and listening to feedback before finally unleashing their work on what is usually an unsuspecting audience. Their current set is to die for, It’s well thought out, it has balls (big hairy balls at that), attitude, rhythmic groove, eye watering solo’s and riffs galorous.

Whilst most bands are busy looking for acceptance into a scene or genre and the subsequent ‘pigeon holing’ which ensues, these guys are desperate not to suffer such a fate and wish to be known simply as a ‘Rock’ band. This is kind of fortunate as each of the bands collective 10 legs could easily plant a size 9 in any number of rocks musical sub genres; Desert, Alt, Stoner, Garage, Groove, there are even elements of Funk and Metal being bounced around. Don’t get me wrong they aren’t re-inventing the art of Rock music, but what they are doing is slightly different from any other band on the local scene. Their sound is very much their own and to me the Soul Fire Saints are like a beacon of ambient light buzzing away beneath the cold steel skies of the Steel City. Few, other than those already exposed to their wares will know about them, though I’m pretty certain this won’t be the case for very much longer, if it’s true that the cream always rises to the top – then I would put my mortgage on these guys getting kudos and the recognition they deserve in 2014.
So, in summary, you have three choices; stick to what you know, grow more familiar with it, embrace it & learn to live with it; like you would a club foot, or, go out and find something else, something new, fuss over it, hope it grows testicles, try to love it like a long lost brother, before ultimately discovering it’s very mediocre, thus the fire in your belly dies, your new found friends slowly drift away and your life plunders helplessly into obscurity and self abuse.

Or take up the option of going to see these guys in action, become so cool you develop a swagger that would make John Wayne look like Louis Spence, decide you want to have their babies and enjoy the f*cking ride, yelling ‘hell yeah’ to passers-by - Soul Fire Saints styleeeeee!!
