The first of this year's lectures deals with the life and election as pope of Benedict XV, along with his difficult efforts to establish a policy of impartiality on the part of the Holy See, which become still more problematic with the entry of Italy into the war on the side of the Entente.

A discussion of the course of the war between 1914-1917, and various peace initiatives. These initiatives include the Socialist Zimmerwald Movement and the work of the Emperor Karl and Empress Zita in the Sixtus Affair. The central focus, however, is Benedict XV's 1917 Peace Proposal and the complex negotiations of Nuncio Pacelli with the Central Powers in Germany and Cardinal Gasparri with the Entente Powers from the Vatican.

This lecture falls into two parts. Part One is a discussion of the military and political situation from the Russian Revolutions of 1917 through the Treaty of Brest Litovsk and the treaties emerging from the Paris Peace Conference, ending in the troubled aftermath in Eastern and Central Europe down to the Kapp Putsch of 1920 in Germany. Part Two deals with Benedict XV and the Holy See's reaction to and critique of a flawed Peace, the measures taken to organize church life in changed borders, and the discussion of what a truly new international fraternity with lasting strength would entail.

This talk deals with the basic spiritual and intellectual aspects of the official Roman Church view of the purification that might come from the horrors of World War One, based on Pius XI's motto:  "The Peace of Christ in the Reign of Christ".

The nineteenth century Catholic revival, promoted by the Papacy, placed its emphasis upon the full meaning of the Incarnation. This "Roman School" insisted that all of nature had to be "transformed in Christ". One consequence of this was the need to rebuild a Christian International Order. This lecture deals with what that kind of international order would entail, and what obstacles stood in its way.

A discussion of ideas on Missiology, the Youth Movement, Liturgical Reform, Ecumenism, and Personalism/New Theology that show a growing fissure between the idea of  "transformation in Christ" and "transformation of Christianity in response to vital, secular, energetic forces".
