Flowing waters is a traditional guqin piece in handbooks from 1425. The Shenqi Mipu connects it with Tai Mountain in Shandong and the story of Boya, famous player of antiquity, and Ziqi, the woodcutter who was the only one to recognize his evocation of nature in playing High Mountains Flowing Streams. When Ziqi, the ideal listener, passed away, Boya broke his qin, never to play again.
