Jeff 23 cut his teeth at the first London inner city warehouse parties. He began to DJ in 1991 and swiftly made a name for himself at club events and underground parties in the UK. Joining Spiral Tribe as the rave scene exploded across the country, Jeff then moved into continental Europe to help spearhead the nomadic drive of Spiral Tribe and became one of the major musical forces in the collective

Jeff was instrumental in forging a harder edged sound, which influenced the scene throughout the 90s. He remained innovative and musically restless and was instrumental in cross-fertilising UK and European underground sounds as well as driving new sounds and new genres over the past 20 years. He was heavily involved in the organisation of the first large scale underground parties and festivals on the European mainland as well as some of the biggest club events in France such as Elegal Frequencies. He has released over 40 records and his passion for musical depth and creative evolution has proved deeply potent.

Jeff’s current sound is guided by the hypnotic effects of techno in its purest form and he is a pioneer of the new wave techno style, though he always has a versatile and unexpected spectrum of styles in the bag. His instinctive ability to take dancefloors on profound journeys have made him a leading figure in European techno and he continues to push the envelope from week to week.

69db has been improvising on liveset since 1991.

Participating in the very first Spiral Tribe raves in Sept 1990 ( Detention and Expelled at the school house NW London ) led him to more and more involvement with the crew. For the next 6 years, he would be helping to produce the Spiral Sound and releasing their records. Since the Spiral days he’s been very active on the European underground rave circuit. For over 25 years, he has worked all over the world in raves of all kinds from free to commercial.

The 69db ethic has always been live Improvised mixing . The idea being the importance of reflecting what is going on on the night. It is only when you get on stage in front of the audience that you know what should be played.

Tempo being the key to many styles it has led his mixes to vary with regards to what feels right on the night. From ambient to Hardcore passing by everything in between. However, 69db is best known as being one of the pioneers of the Hard Techno genre.

Other than SP23 his most recent project is dharmatechno.org where he improvises at a meditation retreat to bring rave to meditation. These 6 hour mixes show the flexibility of what an improvised livesset can do.

69db has worked on many labels such as Trax records chicago, Labworks, Force inc.,Acid orange, Spiral Tribe Records, Network 23 records , Drop Bass records, Rabbit City ......... Much of 69db's output was to be found on Expressillon the Paris based label 1998-2010. For his latest vinyl releases

Let's meet our selektah for episode 348, Vinyl Junkie:

From the underground rave scene's earliest beginnings, to its most current and upfront versions and in all it's wonderful forms and guises, DJ, Producer and on occasion Promoter Vinyl Junkie, has always been part of dance music culture's vibrant and exciting day to day processes. Beginning his musical journey in 1989 and kicking off his professional career in 1991, Vinyl Junkie’s journey from then until now, has been one that has been highlighted in rave music infamy. From becoming aninstant hit with the free party scene in the early nineties, to becoming a main stage artist for many of the underground’s mightiest promoters such as Universe, Fantazia and Raindance (as well as many, many, more).He has also become a regular fixture at Glastonbury Festival having played numerous prime-time sets in the Temple, The Cave and Salon Carousel.

 

Although he is best known for Old Skool Rave and the 140 Breakbeat sound, Vinyl Junkie has more recently started to put his stamp on the ever growing Jungle / Drum & Bass scene with the label, Ghetto Dub (which he jointly owns with partner Rachael E.C) going from strength to strength and releasing many a skull-cracking banger over the last few years. 

Just as prominent a part of the dance music movement now as he ever was in the early 90's, Vinyl Junkie is nothing if not consistent in his approach to tune selection, performance and the all round entertainment style required to whip crowds up into a frenzy.
