I haunt the scenes of picnic greens;
butterflies once nestled in my hair
a tangled mane, I unfold with you

In silence we lay on amber shores
beside the mint-green tide
while the waves rolled by and by
my heart ached like a heavy rope—

Hughes’ enormous breakthrough came from the fact that the roots of his poetry were in Black American music, not white European literature. He pushed the vernacular into the mainstream, but it came through his prism altered. His poetry is in the slang, the local, the specific – this is often where the greatest poetry lies. This is how language develops, or at least how poetry develops – to accept more and more voices into it. (Robert Burns did the same thing. He brought the language and dialects he heard around him into literature. Chaucer may be the prime example of this. He helped CREATE the language we speak today, and he did so by amplifying the voices of people on the ground. Local. Barmaids, farmers, drunks, floozies.) Poetry like this is how other people – maybe even those who are resistant – are able to start listening. Or, better yet: HEARING.
