Nothing Else Matters

Outside The Airplane is the musical project of Patrick Mahoney.

A lifetime musician, Patrick got his start playing drums. However, he switched to guitar at 15 when a local punk band called Vacant Authority needed a guitar player.

Next was Grin, which did not include Nils Lofgren amongst its members. Grin was a careerist move as the singer was local fanzine editor Mike Gitter. Eventually, Mike moved to New York. But before he did, he introduced Patrick to Pat Dubar from Uniform Choice.

While preparing for a Uniform Choice tour, Patrick, Dubar and Colin Sears from Dag Nasty started making plans to start a new band that would sound exactly like The Cult. The plan was to start the band in the fall of 1989. However Dubar got an offer to join Mind Funk so this band never happened. 

Patrick then started jamming with Vic Bondi from Articles Of Faith and Jones Very. By then, Colin Sears was in College at UMASS, along with original Dag Nasty bassist Roger Marbury. ALLOY was formed and lasted for 3 albums and 6 tours. For the 2nd album, Pete Hines from Cro-Mags and Handsome joined the band on drums. Patrick left the band after Colin quit for the 2nd time.

A lot of years went by. 

Outside The Airplane's album was recorded in 2023. With influences ranging from Ladytron and Orbital to Bob Mould and Swervedriver, Patrick layers guitar and sampled sounds over drum loops and other percussion and then tops it off with his OK singing voice.
