Inspirations

I have had enough of turning on the radio and hearing the 45th spouting his crazy. My mind spirals, my anxiety peaks and I find it hard to do anything but feel mad and hopeless. I'm done with feeling devastated every time I turn on the radio.

So, in the interest of my ability to stay clear, motivated and inspired to fight for justice over the next four years of the Trump regime, I have compiled this playlist. I'm thrilled to share it with you.

In these tracks you can listen to the voices of true leaders: women and men, young and passed, black, brown, queer, muslim, and others who have changed this country and are changing our world for the better. You may nod your head in agreement or totally disagree with some things you hear. It doesn't matter because this playlist is filled with beautiful food for thought, meant to open our minds and hearts and above all: move the human spirit.

I also encourage you to play your favorite tracks with your kids as an alternative to news talk radio. Instead of sheltering them from the toxicity of the current moment, spark conversations with your little ones about the ideas and movements that really matter to their future and way forward in the world.

In his latest collection of poetry, "Vivas to Those Who Have Failed,"—a title taken from a line by Walt Whitman—Espada begins with a tribute to the 1913 Paterson silk strike, when a group of mostly immigrant workers in New Jersey fought for improved working conditions and an eight-hour workday. He goes on to address struggles and injustices up to the present day, including the police killings of unarmed African Americans and the spate of U.S. mass shootings. Espada also pays tribute to his late father, the legendary photojournalist, teacher and activist Frank Espada.
