YËDM, NICNAC - Memphis Süd (Original Mix)

With this mix, I wanted to highlight the rhythmic connections between funk, disco, and house music. I selected tracks in these styles that draw from West African 12/8 grooves, South African Afro Beat (the original Tony Allen kind of Afro beat ;) and traditional Cuban rhythms. The 12/8 meter allows for the coexistence of a triplet feel and a duple feel and is where the 3:2 clave (found in rumba, son, mambo, slasa, songo music to name a few) was derived. This clave, or ‘key’ is the magic that makes us move. I focused on tracks that have live recorded traditional Latin and African percussion like Shekere, timbales, and the agogo bell. It also features live drumming by yours truly! These rhythms weave through Bootsy Collins bass lines, Highlife guitar chunks, improvised jazz solos, and some psychedelic synthesizers.  

For me, music is all about love, connection, and growth. Lyrically, this mix balances questions our capacity to love and be loved. And songs that speak on deep, unique, and powerful human connection. I took a slower mixing pace which gives room for the music to breath and the groove to settle. I’d love for you to give it a listen and I hope it lifts your spirit 💛
