This is an old song, originally written in 1992 or '93 while on a hitchhiking trip through the Nevada desert from Boise to Tucson Arizona. It took my friend and I eight days on the road to travel about 700 miles. 

The title is a reference to the two of us standing on opposite sides of the highway, willing to take a ride any direction as long as it got us out of there. It's about desperation, resignation, freedom, harassment, and finding beauty in the midst of extremes.

It is an experience I will personally never forget, and I have written the story once before but it was destroyed when a computer crashed and literally caught on fire before I could print it.

In the last few years I have started to try and tackle writing it again, and I stalled out a bit. Maybe revisiting this song will help inspire me to finish   documenting the tale?

Ron and I originally recorded this song with our old band Godzoundz, but it was only ever released on a very limited cassette run. We decided a while back that we should chip away at re-recording these songs and try to give them their due as it was all pretty deep underground back then. So here's the first one of those.

Our basement studio flooded a couple weeks ago and production has been temporarily slowed, so we thought we'd trot out some of these oddities and misfits while we chip away at reworking our studio and getting it put back together. Hope you enjoy!

WHO PUT BELLA IN THE WYCH ELM ! 

A true and fascinating story of an unsolved murder that is literally five minutes from my house in Hagley Woods.
When I first moved to the area more than 30 years ago I would see homemade signs around on the road islands saying……
Who But Bella In The Wych Elm.
No internet or google to look things up, so I was puzzled to what it meant for a while until a local newspaper did a feature on the story explaining.
Back in the early 1940s four  teenage boys found the skeleton remains of a female pushed down into the hollow of a wych elm tree in Hagley Woods while they were out poaching for rabbits and bird eggs to supplement their diets in war time. The skeleton had been there 18 months or more.
There are many wild and wonderful theories of how and why she was put there but still to this day no one knows the real truth.
She was wearing a wedding ring and had been a mother according to the police’s original autopsy. Why wasn’t she missed someone must have known her. 
The world  still goes crazy for the unsolved murder with films, books , plays, BBC  podcasts and documentaries still being made. One site on YouTube as received over 6 million streams, so this isn’t  just local gossip.
This lady was named Bella after the early graffiti chalked on walls in the surrounding areas that said Who Put Bella In The Wych Elm .
She deserves to be treated with compassion, respect and dignity. 
I hope this song goes a little way to that. I fitted the lyrics around to a wonderful piece of music that Noobly had already created. Sometimes it’s just feels he as a catalogue of perfect instrumentals to fit certain themes, what a talented man & friend.

Check it out on their podcast called The Body In The Tree by journalist Nicola Goodwin. Eight short episodes of fantastic honest journalism. 
The cover picture is the actual Police map that marks out the wood and where the Wych Elm was, so I’m told.
My fascination with this only exists because it’s on my doorstep and when I drive past the wood I always give her a kind thought. Her skeleton was never been  buried and stayed in Police archives for years and got  moved around the city . They have said they have lost her skeleton so are unable to do a modern dna test to trace her identity. 
More like it’s to costly and resources are better spent on recent crime not a murder over 80 years ago. She will never be laid to rest.

This is a song that originated with Ken several months ago. He wrote the whole thing on piano, guitar, and drums and presented it to the rest of the band. Of course, everyone was very excited to add their spin to it. I added my bass part first, as the foundation. Ken also left his catchy original guitar intro as it was. Then JJ added his dynamic piano part, which ended up being both foundational and stylistic, along with the sax that you hear in there, too. Stephen added his solid foundational guitar to it, too, soon after. Then it sat, stalled out for need of some vocals. Of course, we asked TMD to add some, which he did in grand fashion for the choruses. All that was left were the verses. Ken wrote lyrics, and gave me an idea for the melody, so I sang the verses to wrap it up. Of course, we asked Stephen to produce and mix it for us, which he did so well, as always.

  We hope you enjoy listening to this song as much as we enjoyed making it.

Acorns turn into oaks but is a long process. 
Since the album release we have gone onto to release singles and EPs on a regular basis.

Gaz Brown, a singer songwriter and the other half of Conscience Of Kings with producer and multi musician Noobly.  Also I’m  a writing partner for Under This Sun with producer and multi musician Sarge, Mike Fox multi musician and producer & multi musician Jeff Roberts under The Bird Thiefs . 

I fell back into writing during 2020 after a 20 year absence. I think the hiatus￼ must have done me a world of good as I haven’t stop writing since, with over 200 songs recorded in studio or demo form. It’s just great to be back doing it again and not having to rehearse in sweaty lock ups and constantly playing live. I have the comfort of my own small studio room and do everything remotely
Having previously only ever fronted bands, the most successful one being 90s psychedelic original underground indie band This Elegant Chaos. I finally bothered to learn guitar and keyboard in the past couple of years .I just wish I had bothered when I was 15 as I might be decent by now!
My songs on this page are just born out of being creative and probably don’t sound nothing like my influences unlike the band page on sound-cloud of This Elegant Chaos.

Influences include late 70s new wave, late 80s indie guitar bands and the 90s explosion of ￼￼the Brit pop era and anything else that’s decent, whatever the style. If it’s good it’s just good!

The demo songs have all been recorded on a Boss Mini BR80 that fits in the palm of my hand. 
It’s all my own work except the  collaborations that are listed under Conscience of Kings, Under This Sun, Jeff Roberts, The Gatsbys and Mike Fox. 
Always open to doing any collaborations with other Soundclouders, don’t be shy to ask. 

Conscience Of Kings is an ongoing project with Noobly that is available on all streaming platforms. 
The aim is to keep recording enough quality material to keep releasing in single, EP or album form all on all major streaming services.
