Abstract Grooves Vol.1

Butter Side Up’s 12th release, Weekend at Raymond’s Place’ comes from San Diego’s hotly tipped John Manhard. A densely textured and unpredictable six-track EP whose languid groove and swing will sound equally sweet warming up a dancefloor or late into the following day. 

Based in LA and resident of cult party V:isions, John’s been on a roll of late, with releases on the likes of Mui Mui, Perfect Timings & InTheBagg (alongside Dylan Payne) cementing him as a singular producer with an impressively broad reference board. 

The EP’s first track, ‘Shake Your Body’ immediately gets under the skin, a bouncy groove and synth-line pulling you under its command. Over the next 30-odd minutes the spell doesn’t lift - deep house tropes twist and turn playfully over shuffling breaks and swinging basslines, reminiscent of West-Coast house’s finer moments. Manhard’s studio-craft and ear for the unpredictable give a fresh perspective to a much revered and distinctively Pacific-coast sound.

This is music for the fuzzy margins either side of peak time. It’s fitting that Hamish first met and heard John’s music at a hazy afters in LA back in 2022, drawn to a selection of tracks which were largely his own. Two years later these ideas have refined to form another stellar release on BSU, complete with original artwork from Max Binski and scheduled for release in early Ocober.

The 12th mix in our series comes from Zya, an emerging visionary in the electronic music scene, driven by an unwavering passion for her craft. Born and raised in Romania, currently living in Bucharest, she has cultivated a deep connection to music, evolving naturally from a devoted listener to a skilled DJ and producer. 

Guided by her curiosity and love for discovery, Zya has become known for her ability to weave intricate stories through sound. Her sets are unearthly journeys through a spectrum of sounds, seamlessly transitioning from sharp tones to groovy house rhythms, and from hypnotic trippy vibes to energizing techno beats. Her ability to deliver a deeply personal and transcendent message through music has earned her a dedicated following and respect in underground circles.

Her career has been punctuated by remarkable milestones, including two performances at the revered Sunwaves Festival. a cornerstone of Romania's electronic music culture. As a producer, Zya has further showcased her innovative prestigious labels such as Pressure Traxx and Playedby, cementing her position as a compeling voice in the underground scene.

Nimbly walking the tightrope between sensuous house folds and more rugged, up-for-the-jugular techno on a deep, dubby tip, Ogazón treats us to a high-end vinyl workout flush with immersive, cinematic motion and proper low-slung club-oriented extrapolations. The result is a mix that swings the pendulum between sheer blazing functionality and an escapist mindset, sparking off the inextinguible will to go out and rave your night away from the daily hassle, and you can trust Ogazón for she certainly knows how to teleport dancers to a whole cozier, comely dimension in the twinkling of an eye. Born from the desire to explore the space between minimalism and emotional depth, an artistic constraint that turned every sound into a precious element. The project is the work of Astral, who crafted immersive atmospheres with soft analog pads and meticulously designed hi-hat patterns.

From the very first moment, the listener is wrapped in warm, enveloping soundscapes: vintage-character pads drenched in long-tail reverbs and ping-pong delays create a sonic horizon where notes meld and dissolve in constant metamorphosis. Each pad layer is subtly modulated via LFOs and dynamic filters to keep the harmonic fabric continuously breathing.

Rhythm comes through in its most essential form: a clean, deep kick paired with hi-hat samples that are sliced, diced, and reassembled into ever-shifting patterns. Micro-automations of filter cutoff and gentle side-chain compression on the kick make the hi-hats dance within the reverb tails, punctuating the ethereal environments with rhythmic peaks of intensity.

The album unfolds as a meditative journey where minimalism isn’t cold austerity but a path to deeper emotional resonance. Every detail of sound design, every wash of reverb, and every tonal shade becomes an emotional touchpoint. Tracks flow seamlessly into one another, carrying the listener through a spatial continuum where time seems to slow.

With this release, Astral confirms a vision of electronic music that is spare yet deeply felt—a fusion of technology and human emotion in a single sonic experience. Perfect for late-night listening in dim light, it invites immersion in an inner landscape that reflects on the infinite possibilities of minimalist sound.
